Driving in Primer??
 

Well as of now its looking like my winter car kicked the bucket and i NEED something to get to work and back. My mustang is presently in primer but its pretty much my only option since the budget is tight right now. How bad is it for primer to get wet and dirty in our fine canadian winters. Im going to have to figure something out by the end of the weekend for work again monday. I may even put on......mudflaps if it goes back on the road.

Thats a really bad idea.

Primer doesnt last at all, especially in the snow and salt thats flying around. I've done this before and I saw rust spots coming up through the primer in short order. I had to.....SHUDDER... spray paint over it to keep it from rotting out. This is with a heavy coat of primer.

Plus, after a month or two, the primer no longer acts as primer anymore: looses it's "stickiness". You'll have to reprime it.

If you absolutely have to either:

a. Spray paint it temporarily. Get that rat patrol look. Use flat paint. You can put real paint over this in a jiffy, but it makes the car look real ghetto

b. This is my favorite! Get some black magic tire silicone and soak the whole car till it's dripping. No, it doesnt dissolve the paint or the primer. Get the bottom too. I've had 3 cars and not a spot of rust at all with them parked outside and driven in the snow. This'll really F^$% up your primer, but it'll resist the snow like crazy

Got a friend in Southeast Texas with a primer LX, no rust problems so far and it was his daily driver for 4 months with it like that, now something is wrong with the motor, but it doesn't have any rust.

Yeah, but this dude is in canada! Texas weather is much friendlier that the lovely weather that we northerners have to put up with. It's snowing right now as I type.

Ever seen the cars with the _roof_ rusted out? That's how much salt they use up here, man. The sidewalk is white

Don't do it. buy some $500 wrong wheel drive import crap to drive for a couple a months. Save the mustang till you get some paint on it. Oh, and if you use silicone, I hope the painter is some one you hate. That thing will fisheye to the primer, contamenate the paint booth, and just wreck his life for about 3 months. Some painters do deserve it tho...

I'd go with a quick, cheap spray paint job. Just on the lower side of the car should do. The problem with primer is it absorbs water and will cause your car to rust FAST in the cold weather. If you don't want the car to look funny with a halfass paint job then use some flat clear.

At least do the areas behind each wheel.
