Dumps??
 

Does anyone have dumps or herd dumps on a fairly stock 5.0? Sound good bad?

Better without cats.

I love dumps man. In my opinion they rumble much more than pipes. My friend had em on his 93 cobra and they sounded sweet, I believe they were macsl. The only downside is you get a much louder humming sound in the interior. I still like em though.

flowmasters sound much better without any turndown or tailpipe after them.

I bought my 88 with 2 chamber flowmasters without turndowns or tailpipes. IT WAS EXTREMELY LOUD! I even had the stock h-pipe on. I really wasn't bothered by the sound, I actually kind of liked it, except on the many occasions that the cops gave me a hard time about it. From what I've read, and been told, you are actually losing torque by using turndowns. Take care, Keith

I'll second that. You do lose torque with turn downs. I used to run turn downs when I was younger & dumber. But I'm in So. Cal. & drive my car on the street, so I quickly wised up. Once I had the new motor with head & intake the car was just way too loud and cops began harassing me. So I put the tail pipes back on and totally felt the difference in the lower rpm range. Noticeably more torque. Actually the car felt more responsive all the way through the RPMs. I'll always run tailpipes now. I even read an article years ago on Flowmaster mufflers. It said something like...most mufflers are built to perform at their best with around 12-18 inches of tailpipe?? Seemed true in my case. I'm sure if you were pushing like 600-700hp...then it might be a different story though. :p

My mustang is fairly stock with dumps. I love them! Loud as hell when I stand on it(most the time) But quiet when sneaking home at 2 am. Or sneaking past cops.....

I don't run turn down's (dumps) either. It sounds great but yeah it's very loud. I run BBK Full Length Shorties, MAC Pro Chamber, and 2 1/2" pipe going into 2 1/2" flows. I had tail pipes on it until around a month ago then I got tired of having "The Stealth Car" and pulled out the reciprocating saw and hacked them off.
If you really want it to sound mean you should check out cutting the exits completely out, put about a 4 inch hole in the back of them. It sounds great belive it or not but yeah it's even louder. It's like just a low bass rumble with no back pressure.

I keep the tailpipe for exactly that reason, the torque. I am going to expiriment at the track with dumps and the tail pipes to see the difference in ET and MPH. I love the look on my coupe with them also.

sound REALLY mean with h-pipe and 2 Chambers. Even on a totally stock motor. People get intimidated.:D

Yea my coupe looks nice with skinies and m/t's, and no tailpipes, but i may put some on to pass inspection.

I have experimented at the track with, and without pipes, i saw really no loss, or gain, only thing i gained was looks and compliments from people and cops:( but since i have 3 cbrs they give a nice smooth deep sound, and at wot they can almost pass for 2 cbrs.

Dumps before flows?
 

Anyone heard dumps before the flows... ?

Never on a stang. I have heard them on a '01 ss with gutted cats. Have you ever heard a LS1 with an exhaust leak? That is exactly what it sounds like. I venture to say the stang will sound the same. It's pretty nasty. I tried the mufflers with no pipes at all, and the exhaust smell in the car was unbearable. I cut about 10" to 12" off of the original tailpipe, the end with the turndown by the bumper, and welded them to the back of the mufflers. Although it is not as loud as with no pipes at all, I like the sound alot better. It gave it more of a performance car sound than just a loud as hell rumble. But that is just my opinion. The best way for you to find out what you want is trial and error.
