Catyltic convertors???
I was wondering if any one removed the cats from their cars and what effect did it have. I have an 88GT Speed density.
Would the car pass the emissions sniffer if I hollowed out the cats???? If it does pass it will be buy me some time so I can get the bucks for hiflow cats. I also need to know if Hiflow cats are legal in NJ and the car has 4 cats I see a lot of aftermarket set ups with only 2 cats are they ok to install in NJ chuck 88GT |
No chance in hell of passing emissions. Well, at least here in mass. You'll have to pull some tricks. Hollow them out if you want to then do this: Take the cross over tube and cut off the end with the "bulb", you can always reattach it with some hose. This allows exhaust gas to flow forward through the pipe. Attach some kind of hose to it and route it somewhere inconspicous. This should divert enough nasty fresh co loaded exhaust gas to make a real difference.
Furthermore, you can get a really small pulley, like an alternator pulley and drill 4 holes in the pulley so you can bolt it up to the airpump. It wont look pretty, but boy is it effective. Loud as all hell, though. Bypass the airpump dump valve for this. Needless to say, remove or divert the TAD solenoid too. You might have to disconnect the "check engine" lightbulb since most states will fail you if it's lit and it WILL be lit after you pull the cats. By the way..... mustangs run like **** with offroad h-pipes in my humble experience. They hesitate off the line on low throttle and sound really chuggitty chuggity until you get the rpm's up. It will be much throatier, so if the cops in your town are nazis like here in belmont, they will pull you over to "check you out" and make sure you're legal |
By cross over tube, I meant the cross over behind the cylinder heads not the 4-cat crossover. You dont want to harm that!

So I guess it was my imagination, that when I put my cat h-pipe on that my car felt more sluggish down low? Hummm......my car runs a heck of a lot better with and off road h. |
My car passed just fine with the cats gutted last year. I have since got an off road X-pipe. It hurt nothing. It sounds better and feels better than it did with the stock pipe. Now that they have beefed up the spec for allowable co and nox, There's no way in hell I'll pass now. If you have friends that can hook you up with a sticker, or just like paying tickets, go for it. If not, get the pipe with hi-flow cats.

Play all the games you want, it's ultimately you that will suffer. The best advice is to do it right the first time.
Take care, ~Chris |
I got my off-road H-pipe and headers at the same time, so I was really in for a treat. My car was MUCH louder and throatier. I noticed a significant hp increase in the higher rpms, but I did also notice a small loss in low-end torque due to the fact that I have an AOD and I was running the stock gears at the time. Once I had my 3.73's installed... Problem solved.

So some here are telling me that when the catalytic convertors are removed, it will pass an emission's test? what kind of test is that? i would like to know. if that was the case, then why did they put them on their in the first place? huh:confused:
Off road H-Pipe on my car. i noticed a difference about 3500 and up. you lose some low end though. I agree with Chris...... |
