T-5 Transmission Question.
I have a 1995 Mustang Gt 5.0L with a Borg-Warner World Class T-5.My question is; will a T-5 out of a pre-94/95 mustang work in my 95.If not what are the differences, input shaft, switches, etc. Reason I'm asking is T-5's for earlier models seem easier to come buy.Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks , Anthony

Your gonna need the tranny from a 94 or 95. 93 and back trannys have the shifter in a different postion.
|
actually you need
bellhousing from pre-94-95 throwout fork from pre-94-95 and your trans will bolt up perfectly the only difference between the 2 is that the throwout fork on the 94-95's is longer, and the bellhousing is larger. you can pick up a brand new throwout fork from ford for 40.00 and a bellhousing on e bay is going for about 60.00. |
Hey, Ron1. Thanks for the Transmission info link. This is the info I was looking for.It has been a great help. Thanks again.> Hey.sn95gt19 Thanks for the info.I really appreciate it.I have another question though. Can I just replace the input shaft of a 93 an earlier T-5 with a input shaft from a 94/95 T-5, provided the gear ratio's are the same. Thanks,Anthony

i guess you could do that, the only difference is 5/8 in the length of the two, they sell a spacer for the rearend that makes up for the shortness in the driveshaft.

>Thanks,sn95gt19 So your saying the entire transmission is 5/8 of an inch shorter than my original 1995 T-5 So if I swap input shafts, I will still need a spacer to make up the difference in the drive shaft and what does this do to the shifter location inside the car? Thanks,Anthony

The stock 94/94 bellhousing is 5/8" deeper than the 86-93 models, this moves the trans rearward 5/8", and shortening the driveshaft 5/8" to provide clearence for the shifter in the console.
The transmission is the same length, but the input shaft is 5/8" longer on the 94-95 model. If you get a 86-93 trans and swap a 94-95 input shaft, you can use your stock setup and it will fit fine. If you swap in a 86-93 bell, 86-93 Driveshaft, 86-93 clutch fork, and a 86-93 trans, all of that will fit. This will of course make the shifter 5/8" closer to the firewall. What I cannot tell you is if that will be a big problem. The factory will look for more clearence than absolutley necessary due to production line ease of assy. Hope that helps |
Thanks for the info Chevyguy.I wanted to keep everything as original as possible. So if I end up with a 94/95 specific T-5 down the road here. All I have to do is Pull the trans and stick the 94/95 in.I really appreciate all you guys helping me out.Just wanted to cover all the base's so there would be no suprise's.Gonna swap input shafts and stick it in, this weekend.I'll let you all know how it went sunday. Thanks again for all the help,Anthony

>UPDATE: Took off work today and pulled my 95 specific T-5 and put it's inputshaft in a 92 T-5 and stuck it back in.No problems. Thanks for all the help.I am already working on a new project and need some help.Look for a new thread called (Got Tremec?) Thanks, Anthony:D

input shaft
Congratulations on your swap! I was wondering how hard it was to swap the input shaft to the older tranny? Did you need any special tools?
Thanx |
Alex89GT,I see you want to do the same thing. It's pretty easy if you have a world class T-5 The front bearing is a caged roller bearing w/ race that can be removed. The non world class has a (ball bearing), and is pressed onto the input shaft, race CAN'T be removed.Although the world class roller bearing is pressed on too,the race can be removed from it.Being that the race can be removed it makes it alot easier to remove the inputshaft. There is a notch(cresent shaped) that has to be lined up so the inputshaft (gear), clears the cluster gear and then pulls right out.I have a few tricks and got lucky and didn't drop anything in the trans. So I didn't have to remove the shift fork cover (top cover) to look inside and visually line up the notch. You will probably have to take the shiftfork cover off.If you have to take the cover off it's not to hard to put back on if all your doing is swapping I/S's. .Also the bearing retainer has a drain hole that must be at the bottom, there are loose roller bearings(no cage) and a washer inside the input shaft that could fall into the trans if your not carefull when you pull the I/S out,and the synchro will probably fall out and it must go back correctly too. When removing the shiftfork cover there are four plastic guides that can fall in the trans. You must also make shure both your T-5,s are the same gear ratio, can't swap if different. If you still think you want to try this, email me and I'll send you some detailed info.If you have never rebuilt a manual trans,I would find a trans shop to do the swap for you.Should be inexpesive. No special tools required.95/GT/5.0
