Brain pickin time - 351 heads
I'm hoping someone here has experience with these things. I have a set of heads that came off a 1970's vintage Glastron Carlson marine engine. (302) I think they are the '69 351 heads but not sure. On the underside of the intake runners (reading from top to bottom) are the following
D00E C THis is all on runner #1 351 24 The intake valves are 1.84's, exhaust ? ? ? There are humps in the exh. ports but no thermactor holes. My question: These have rocker arm studs in them and I believe they are pressed in studs. Are they indeed? I'm gonna try to cut for 1.94's, and 1.60's with a lot of port work in hopes of getting better flow than the stock heads without spending an arm and a leg. Has anyone worked a set of these over and if so, did it help? |
I have the same set you're talking about DO0E 1970 351W ... Most have the thermactor bump but they aren't drilled. Mine are already set up for the 1.94 intake 1.60 exhaust. I believe they come stock with 1.84 / 1.54 but i'm not sure about that. Whether you can go out to 2.02 intakes i'm not sure either.
There is a good article on porting these heads at fordmuscle.com .... I printed it out before they went subscription. I'd send you the article but my scanner is on the fritz :( With the home port job and the jump up to the 1.94 intake valve they actually flow pretty well for a budget head. With a home port job and 1.94/ 1.60 valves they flow 211/181 @ .600 Oh and yes they are pressed in studs. |
Thanks for the info. They will probably wind up on the 331. The oldest boy found them but he plans to go with the TFS heads. (someday) With any luck, I'll have the new valves and the heads cut for them by month's end. Then it's hoggin time!

That is a good up grade. You may want to have the pressed in studs pinned, or removed and tap the holes for screw in studs.

I was thinking of screw in studs. I haven't had a chance to talk to the machine shop yet but I'm hoping it's not too much to pull em and tap the holes. Cutting for the larger valves is about $120 so that's not too bad. Chevy valves are pretty cheap at around 6 bucks for Manleys. To make a long painful story short, I figure about half the cost of Windsor Jr. heads and an equivalent flow rate. This is a winter project along with the Cleveland so I'm not in a great hurry. The boy is slobbering pretty heavy for them but it's fun watching that. Thanks for the help.

Just something to think about, I have a 69 351 w/ the heads, i considered doing exactly what you are considering, but after adding up all the posibbilities, u can spend like almost the price of a decent aftermarket head. And you will not have the future upgrades like the aftermarket head, (porting for more flow) and you spent all that and wont really have alot if you decide to increase your hp, which we all do. So i would go with an aftermarket aluminun head, just me,

You got a good point. I've been mulling it over for a few weeks and I've pretty much convinced myself to go ahead with these. Here's some justification. These will go to one of the boy's cars. Oldest son wants to go with TFS heads and says he wants to wait until he has the money. Youngest son moved out recently and won't have money for aluminum heads for quite a while. I already have new springs and keepers. The valves and the cutting will run about 300. I'm doing the ports and bowls ( I like this part) About 125 for the rest of the machine work. Like I said, about half the price of a set of aluminum heads and he don't have to know about the cost of the machine work. He gets better heads and I get to see if I know anything about porting like I've convinced myself I think I do. Har-Har. Anyway, this is something I wanted to play with and if it works out well for him, so much the better.
