need info on camless engines (electrohydraulic valves)
 

Well as the subject states, I need some info. I've got a few SAE technical articles, but I would like to find a couple good websites that kind of "dumb down" the topic so I can make it sound easier to comprehend to someone without an engineering background.

I'm an undergrad mechanical engineer, and I have to write a paper and do a presentation over this topic, and I have to format it in a way in which to explain the concept to the average "Joe Schmoe"

I seem to remember a post about this a year or two ago, but couldn't find it in the archives. PKRWUD I believe you were a part of the thread (but its hard to find one that you aren't:p ) Got any info for me? Or a good place to look?

"The November 1996 issue of MACHINE DESIGN magazine has a article about a Ford run at a camless engine. The valve actuation is by means of hydraulic pulses piloted by small electric solenoids. The scheme is complete with hydraulic energy recovery at the end of the valve strokes to keep the power requirements down and to damp the action of the valves.

Ford's system seems to identify the concerns that will have to be addressed in any successful camless system. The design is elegantly straightforward, but not one I would have come up with in a life time.

I could not find my copy of the magazine or find a path to it on the MACHINE DESIGN website. The magazine should be archived in any engineering library, but I do not have access to one. Perhaps some one with access could sneak a scan of the article to those who are interested. Ford allowed it to be published once. They may have it on line."

I just did a quick search on www.google.com using 'camless engines' and then one on 'electrohydraulic valves' and found a plethera of information out there. Seems to be lots of research articles from universities and such (lot of .edu sites).

Just a start.

I know it is not the quite the same thing but I know a while back a friend sent me a link to a site with a company that had come up with some rotary ceramic valves that looked pretty interesting and they had them mounted on a 5.0... I can't find it now but I think it was named something Coates or Coates something.... If it is still around and anybody has a link I would like to have it again!:cool:

Hey fiveohpatrol, does your school have a Formula SAE racecar team?

we used to up until a couple years ago. It was really unorganized from what I hear, and they were irresponsible with the money, so they got shut down. Now it is revived as TRM, and we are trying to get the funding to do another formula SAE car. Check out the link in my sig. We've got a 84GT 342cid project thats just gettin started. Its fun building a stang with other people's money:) especially when I'm gonna be rippin it down the track in it!
