Race Harness........HELP!!!!!

HELP!!! I need 5 point harness in my 88 Notch. I have no clue on which ones to buy. Floor mount? Roll bar mount? I have a Maximum Motorsporst roll cage, do I weld them to that? How do you mount the crotch strap? I have the stock LX seat, and would like to keep them if its at all possible.

Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

You want the rollbar mount type, and you can attach the crotch strap to the floor bolts in a stock seat....... try Summit and describe what you have to them on the toll free line and they can hook you up.

Speaking of this? is there a type you can use without a rollbar?

According to the NHRA rule book, the "crotch strap" or submarine belt, can pass in front of a stock seat but the tie down point must be behind the chest line. On a "Y" type belt it can be rolled around the cross bar behind the seat but it must have a "U" shaped bracket welded on the bar to keep the belt from sliding side to side. www.summitracing.com is your best source and cheapest. Their catalog has a greater selection than their website, so just order a catalog. RJS, RCI, Stroud..lots of manufacturers. One thing to ask, if the belt can be re-certified, otherwise you will have to buy a new one every 2 years. Stroud does theirs for $35.00 + shipping.

Buy from Summit and your looking at only $59 for a Roll bar mount and don't worry about it needing re-certified in 2 years. You will spend the average of $35 plus shipping and a couple of weeks and you will be back to the $59 for a new and they get dirty after 2 years so at least it looks nice again.

Ok...maybe not on a $59.00 belt, but on a $190.00 cam lock...well worth the savings.

;) Thanks guys. This is gettin really crazy. I know it for my own safety. Where do I get the "tabs" to weld on the cage? Summit?
And why do you need new seat belts every 2 years??? ***** my stock seat belts are 15 years old and they work perfect. Do I have
to remove my stock belt, or can I leave it in just to drive it on the street. I really don't wanna stap in a 5 point harness to drive around the block......

Thanks again :) ;) :) ;)

Not sure what you mean by "tabs". You can keep your regular seat belt. The belts are date coded by the manufacturer, and they are only good for 2 years according to NHRA rules. IMO, its a way for the manufacturers to make more money, but that's the rule.

Ron1....aren't there like little tabs to be welded on to the roll cage in order for the harness to attach to? Thats how I thought it worked.

Thanks

They're recertified every two years to keep you from winding up like Dale Earnhardt. A small nick/tear in the webbing greatly reduces their strength and reliability. Therefore you have them recertified every two years to make sure there's not a nick/tear in the webbing. I pull mine out every two years and usually sell them to local dirt trackers; apparently they don't have the two-year requirement like NHRA/IHRA.

Thanks Jeff, now I know why you need to replace them after 2yrs. I looked in Summits online catalog, and there are 2 sizes 55" and 62", What size should I buy?

Thanks

If you are talking about the tab or tabs to bolt the belt into, Iwrap mine the tail of the "Y" around and thru a "U" shaped bracket that is welded to the bar. No tabs. On mine the shoulder harness go over the seat and then over my shoulders.
BTW...I see you are running a 600 CFM on the 306..I ran 750's on both my 306's and now have an 825 CFM BG on my 347.

Ya....the carb is small. It's all I had at the time. I was thinkin more along the lines of a 650cfm flowed to about 800cfm. I might put a 100 shot on the car, but right now these belts are more important.

Does any one have any pictures of what the belts look like in?

Thanks Again..... :D

Ron1 01-15-2003 12:33 PM

Can't help with the pictures, but do make sure that you use the right fuel when you go nitrous. With your compression ratio, it becomes fairly important. Mine is 12.4/1 and I use VP Racing fuels C16. As far as carb size..on the engine Dyno, my 347 at peak power used 798 CFM. So an 825 CFM it was.

Ya, I drive mine on the street to shows. I have 11.5-1 comp. I use Sunoco 94, mixed with 114 Sunoco race fuel. At the track it gets 114 only. Big differance with straight race fuel. I'm really nervious about using nitrous, but the biggest i'm going is 100 shot. Im going to start with 50 and tinker with that. First i have to build a new fuel system for the system.
