Harmonic Balancer

Do I need a 28oz. or a 50oz. Balance, stock crank and flywheel? On a 289. Old Balancer does not say.

28 oz., not sure though

I think it's the 28 oz. Just get the stock Ford one for the '66 289 non Hipo. It'll be the correct one. I got mine from John's Mustang here in Houston but other Mustang parts places will have them too. Mine was about $100 a few years ago.

Rev is correct: 28.2 oz

While we are here, I used a new Balancer from a 5.0 coversion kit, on a 67' 302, I guess it was right because the motor runs smooth.

I assume you used the rest of the conversion kit and the resultant motor uses 351w firing order? If the firing order is 351w then you'd be using the 50 oz in imbalance components.

Firing order?

Isn't the firing order determined by the cam used? Either the 351W order with a 351W cam or the 289/302 firing order if that cam is used. I'm pretty sure a 351W cam can be used in the 289/302 simply by changing the firing order or vice versa.

I made the assumption that if it was a 5.0L conversion kit, then it used 5.0L rotating components, crank, cam, etc. Else why call it a 5.0L conversion?

You're probably right Jeff, but I just assumed it was an early 302 and that he used a 5.0 balancer. Sounds like it worked though.

working is the key ingredient, isn't it? Can't argue with success!

trevor'72 02-06-2003 10:52 PM

windsor firing order

The firing order can be interchanged on the 5.0. Did you know the 5.0 HO (high output) had the windsor firing order, stock? And no the cam/ crank don't have to be changed. Wierd EH? Guess it's just a Ford thing? Not sure about the balancer, whether they were different ones or if that's even affected by the firing order at all.

Cool for detail are what mke this hoby fun! Any one else got any interesting trivial knowledge?

It is an early 302, but with a 5.0 water pump, oil pan, harmonic balancer, and timing chain cover. Standard firing order.

I was told that u did have to change the cam in order to change the firing order. Because I knew of people who used newer roller cams, and they had to change the firing order. Look at your summit for cams, one cam uses the 1-3-7 I think it is, and another one uses the 1-5-3.
