86 gt, How do i bump up my timing
 

I have an 86 gt, i have a timing light. i wanted to move up my timing to 14deg, how do i do it. thanks alot you guys.

Ok to start. Knowing ( or thinking ) that you want to set your base timing to 14 deg.. may be a little much. Depends on what octane gas you are running. For higher timing you in turn need more octane to control pinging and detonation. So before you turn the timing up deside what octane gas you will be running most of the time. After you've made this decision, get the timing light ready, clamp power cord (alligator clip) to the positive side of the battery and the plug wire lead to the #1 plug wire. Loosen the bolt that holds the dist. down, Dont take it all the way out as the dist. can jump out and jump timing. Just loosen it enough that you can rotate the dist. slightly. Crank the car. come back to froint of car and shine timing light into engine bay shining on crank pulley. ( indicator on passenger side of engine ) You will see marks on the crank damper going by the indicator. Turn the distributor untill the desired mark is "hitting" (going by) the timing indicator when the light flashes. shut off engine and tighten hold down clamp back down. There ya have it. I dont believe there is a pill on a 86 model. If there is.. you will have to remove it before setting the timing and reinstall after after its done. The pill is in the wiring harness going to the distributor. Just a little grey plug that you pull out before cranking to set timing. Then reinstall it after you shut the engine off.

It helps if you use a little dab of Whiteout on the timing mark. You can pick up the mark alot easier.

The "pill" which Coupe Devil refers to is called a spout connector. With it removed, you can set the base timing with no computer interaction at all. Then when you plug it back in, the computer recognizes this as the base timing (14degree's in your case) and then adds timing throughout the RPM range accordingly.

Make sure you remove the spout before adjusting the timing, and be very careful to remember to replace it when done. Otherwise your car will be running on 14degree's TOTAL timing. Needless to say, it will run like a 305 chevy motor like that :D
