Vibration Problem
 

On my 95 GTS I noticed a funny vibration the other day. It seems to be more prominent under load. At first I thought it was my passenger side front tire, being out of balance, but in addition to being more noticeable under load I feel it more in second gear (hard acceleration) and between 55-65 MPH cruising. I started noticing it in the steering wheel this morning too. I haven't a clue what it might be, anyone have any ideas?

Is it consistent with going 55mph ?

Yes: something to do with suspension (tire balance, front end alingment, bent rim)

No: It might be the torque converter. My mom's went out in her 95 T-bird (4.6L) and my GF's is starting to go out in her 95 stang (3.8L). I think there is something worng with the torque converter installed on the 95's.

Its a 5 speed so it's definately not a torque converter problem.

Between 55-65 MPH it seems pretty consistent. Thats what is throwing me off. If it was a tire or rim wouldn't it increase with speed?

Not all the time. When a tire is just out of ballence a little you will notice it during a certin speed.

OK, I'll switch to my "summer" rims and tires next time its nice enough out.

What about the vibration I feel in second gear only under acceleration? Could it be my clutch slipping or something like that? Wouldn't I notice that more in a higher gear when I hammer on it?

On my way home from work tonight I paid close attention of the vibration. While I was stuck going slow in traffic I noticed that my shifter was vibrating a lot. So when traffic got going again I held my hand on it and it made the tips of my fingers itch. Between 20-35 MPH and 55-65 MPH it vibrated a lot. The faster I went the more it vibrated all the way up to 95 MPH. Thats where I figured out that my driveshaft U-Joints must be gone. Is my logic correct or am I way off?

my u joint went out on my 5 speed and it shook the shifter viloently, well one of the caps was missing haha, yours might not be as bad.....yet, get under there and wiggle them see if they are tight, probably part of the problem

Yep, that's the problem! Get a FMS Alunium drive shaft. I have one and it's really nice. It's an easy install :)

How much do they go for? I checked Summit, and I couldn't find it. I could have sworn that I saw it in the last issue they sent me.
