Engine troubles
I'm having a surge problem at startup. Sometimes when cranked the car idles fine at other times it will idle real low to the point that sometimes it just dies. It did this last night only it would start and then try to die but if I gave it gas it wouldn't take it and started making popping noises under the hood like a backfire. When I let off of the gas it would die. It kept doing this until I let it set there for about 10 minutes and then it started fine and ran fine. I need to have it looked at today but don't have a clue as to what it could be. I don't want a mechanic telling me I need everything under the sun that I don't really need. BTW it is a 95 GT with flowmasters and silencer removed.

Sounds like it's a vacume problem. Spray some brake cleaner in certin parts of your enige (while it's running) and when the idle goes up, that's the part that it's leaking at.
Also, check your TPS. |

I ment IN certin areas.... or on the engine parts themselves. What I was trying to get at is don't just radomly spray the entire engine, you won't know exactly where the leak it. It might help if you put that stupid little straw on the end (I can never get it to work right). Spray the TB, then underneath the upper intake, then where the lower intake meets the heads, etc....

I think the basic concept is.. if there's a vacum leak somewhere it'll suck up the brake clean which is flamable, so the idle will surge a bit..... though if it's a big enough leak you'll hear it... so if you spray certain strategic areas you'll be able to find the general area of the leak and then find it and plug it... it may not be a leak at allo, but for the 25 cents worth of brake clean, it's a good start

Gotcha ;)

Just out of curiousity, has any work been done to the car lately motor wise.....? If anything has been done that would be the area i would look at first...... Just my 5 cents though.

No work has been done to car. The surging idle at startup has been happening for about a month and is slowly getting worse to where it doesn't want to run.

could be that the iac is sticking (idle air control )........try removing it and cleaning it out with a fuel injection safe ,throttle body cleaner ......see if that helps
i'd also try checking the temp sencors ,they play a big role when starting ,the computer has to know the temp of the moter to select ther right tune for start up ,if one of these sencors is bad ...it'll throw the computer off at start up |
I read an article in another forum on rolling idle, they reccomend that you pull apart the grey and white harness connectors and use contact cleaner on them and reinstall with a good dielectric gease, you also may want to check the other connectors in this manner,a bad connection will also cause idle surge.

same thing
my mom had a 95 gt that was doing the same thing you would start it up and it would idle really low and die sometimes if you try to give it gas it would pop and crack like rice cripies. i changed plugs wires cap rotor, fuel filter, cleaned iac, cleaned o2's turned out the mass air sensor went out, imagine the look on my face when i unplugged the sensor while it was running and it didnt make any difference in idle, problem cured with new sensor. my 2 cents.

I'm with Z28eater. in my experience, it really sounds like a MAF. I'm not real sure about the 95 mustang computer, but most others kinda revert to Speed Density with the MAF unpluged. Give it a try... (my 1/4 cent... I'm not worth 2)

I had a similar problem and it turned out being the pickup coil. Just a thought.
