Finding Materials for the home-made ram air
after seeing the post on this a few weeks ago, I kinda got to thinking why I did not look into this long ago.
I know what I want, about how to make it, and have a professional welder who has offered his help....but here is the big question, where can I find the t6061 (I think that is the right number) aluminum sheets?? I saw an article on the internet where the guy said u could buy a 4x4 sheet for 22 bucks-seems cheap to me. The rest of the set up I have been able to locate here and there, but I need to know where to find the aluminum. Thanks- Ryan |
umm seeing that I work in a machine shop that works with that sort of sheet metal and such, I would contact one in your area. Ask a small local machine shop. If theyre too big they'll push you away, being a small fish and all. The price sounds okay, but you dont necessarily need to by the best stuff either. good luck

quality
did not know what quality to get, I just want to make the welding as easy as possible for my buddy...I have never tried to fabricate something from alum. before.

You can user one of there kits to fit your stang. It's cheating but it will probally take less time. They have set ups for Ford.

sweet!!
I have been looking for a website like that for years now. I am actually doing this for 3 vehicles-my mustang, Truck, and Jeep.
the mustang may be able to use their kit, with some modification. I want the dual snorkel, but my shelby scoop is functional, so I want the top of my cold air unit to seal to the hood. Ryan |
My feeling
If you want it funtional to the hood scoop, i think you will have to custom fabricate it as you've already mentioned. BTW, there was a reason for the "shakers". The engine moves with torque independently of the hood.
That Canadian outfit has been around for years advertising in Mustang publications. Surprised you hadn't seen it. Rev |
engine movement
I had considered the engine moving, mine moves much less than most, but still moves a little. I have a chain on mine. I believe it may crack my head, but so far, it has not (6 years and running). Keeps the engine planted nicely.
But for what little it does move, I thought I would use real thick foam to insulate the seal between the box and hood. Wanted to use a seal like the one on the cowl to the hood, but I am not sure that would be tall enough for the movement of the engine and keep everything sealed up. I have searched the net for years, and never found anything like that website. That is the only one I have ever seen, but I like it. May utilize one of those setups for my 79 ford truck (460). If there are any others, let me know!! thanks all, Ryan |
