Stroker questions.

I'm thinking about building a new motor for the car, and why not build a stroker? I'm looking at the 427, go big or go home right? Does anyone out there run a 427? Are they streetable and/or reliable? Not running fuel injection, no computer on my car! Straight up 850 Demon, 125 shot of juice, Dart II heads (iron) and a victor jr. intake. Will the 427 play nice, or should I "settle" for a 408?

hell ya, go with the bigger motor
i wanted to but the money was outragous. think about it you are going to need big block type headers .........2 in long tubes.. check the price of those for a windsor in a fox chassis. and intake....even the super victor probably would nt be big enough, remember, you talking about big block airflow now, upgrade the entire drivetrain, and you cant cheap way from the machine work and there are always hidden expences...........thats why i went with the 393........cause the head flow requirement workd perfectly with an out of the box victor jr. head, and im still a streeter, not an all out racer, so think about the heads that with be required, serious headflow, serious cashflow... .period........
just my thought.................393

I'm still a streeter too, just run a street legal class on Wednesday nights at the track, and some other "classes" on Friday nights! lol My whole drivetrain has been upgraded, I didn't mention that. TKO trans, FMS driveshaft, FMS 8.8 rear 4.10, mosier 31 spline 5 bolt axles, 5 bolt conversion up front as well.

Thanks for the insight!!!

but you have to really think about the torque that monster is going to make. why do you think a c6 is so freaking larger and beefier. to handle the torque of those big blocks...and im telling you a 4 in stroke is huge....the mopar 440 only had a stroke of 3.75 in,....and my 393 has a 3.85 stroke...and its a brute monster...in rippin everything up that is weak.......that cant handle the true torque of a big block

tarmon8r 02-26-2003 03:27 PM

by the way, what is the torque rating on a TKO?

~The Jester~ 02-26-2003 03:30 PM

True, true! I just bought the 351W, so this yet un-named project is slated for NEXT winter. Gonna run my "stock" 302 this summer. I really do appreciate all your advice, that's why I posted here, I wanted to hear from someone that was running one of these things. How did you figure out how much flow you needed from your heads? I know of a formula for Carb CFM, but not for the heads themselves. I'm assuming that will help figuring the headers as well?

~The Jester~ 02-26-2003 03:34 PM

I'm not sure of the exact # on the torque, but I do know it's more than a 3550.

~The Jester~ 02-26-2003 03:37 PM

3550 is 375 ft/lbs
TKO is 450 ft/lbs.

tarmon8r 02-26-2003 03:46 PM

start talking to some big block guys. ask them what kinda flow your gonna need.....thats what i did.........my buddy was a big block mopar fan.......and when i was doing this and learning........he helped me out on that.......but my 393 already exceeds that 450 foot pounds of torque rating.......now imagine another almost 34 cubic inches.......thats alot

what i did was also look at what a good big block around the same cubic inches were running.......as far a headers.....and look at what a 427 big block would use when determining what the horsepower and power band you want........if your very aggressive, you probably would need a 2 inch header. especially if your spraying.........now what kind head is going to have exhaust ports that size... hmmmmmmmmm.....really makes you think when you start relating it to something similar...

tarmon8r 02-26-2003 03:49 PM

sorry if i seem like devils advocate......if you want it .......go for it....i just hate to see problems and hope you get this.........good luck

peace

Don't worry about being the Devil's advocate bud, that's exactly what I wanted! Some friendly advice from someone who's already been down this road.

Thanks again!

price my build up used alot of common part's 302 pistons and such.

im thinking of getting victor chapman heads or afr 205 or 215 but right now i have worked 69 heads there is a cobra board where a few guy's have done the 427 w thing.

if its race only go 427 and hang on.

headers custom made stick with the stick and big slicks.

most of your parts should be upgraded but would work it would limit flow some but hey i would put 427 badges and drive the snot out of it.
