Wounded 2k1 GT

I am trying to help a friend of mine who has a 2k1 GT.

The motor is down on power, and rattles over 2000 RPM with sounds like rocks in a coffee can. (That's the best description I've heard.

The guess is tweaked rod, but this is only a guess. The car has been denied by the local dealer because of mods.

Has anyone heard of a problem like this?

P.S. I don't own a Mustang, but I heard of this site on Maxima.org. I've found some good info on there about my 2k2 so I thought I would try here.

When you say rocks in a can... do you mean it sounds like pinging or rod-knock.

Has he redlined the engine at all? (leads to spun bearing)
Did you drain the engine oil to see if it is milky? (blown head gasket)
I had this happen on a chevy engine when I spun bearing.
I over-revved the engine 3 times before this happened.

Hope this helps. - Better yet, I hope I am dead wrong.

Thanks for the reply

The problem is it doesn't sound like either. I've never heard a rod knock sound like this. I don't think it's been redlined, but to answer you question, the oil is clean.

He's pretty good with engines, this one just isn't easy to open up and look. That's why I was curious if anyone had any had experienced this, before the motor comes out.

Push in clutch, noise change?

what mod's does he have? ford has to prove the mod's caused the problem, thats the law, good luck.

Could be detonation. If the fuel quality is bad, or if you are not getting enough fuel, plugged filter, even minor oil consumption can cause detonation. Detonation can sound as harsh as a rod knock if bad enough. Usually the engine won't last long with severe detonation. Then again you never know.

First, the 4.6's dont have push rods. They are overhead cams. Second, what mods does he have done to it. Look at all the mods in my sig and tell me how I can get warranty work. They CANNOT void his warranty, unless it is a power adder such as super charger or Nitrous etc... Also, they can only deny warranty work IF they can PROVE the mod caused the problem. There was a website, I cant remember where I saw it, which goes into detail about modding your vehicles and warranties. If I come across it, I will post it. Actually, I am surprised this site doesnt have a section with it posted. Considering this is like a MOD central place :)

stangt00: I am curious as to what times your stang is running in the quarter? Also have you had it on a dyno and if so what is your hp?
thanks

I think they were talking about connecting rods(rod knock) not push rods

I meant connecting rods. He is going to push the issue with the dealer. As for mods, his mirror yours with the exception of the chip.
I'll post an update when I find out what happens.

I know this is an old thread, I wanted to thank everyone for their feedback.

If anyone is interested:
The problem has been tracked down and fixed.
The problem was one of the cats disintegrated. New cats, no more rattle, and the car runs great.

Once again thanks for the replies.

I had this problem

Yes I know what you are talking about exactly.. I had this problem. What I did was I backed the timing down to 12 you prolly could go to 13 but when i backed it down the problem went away. My timing was set at 15 and I think that if I'm not going to be at the track then I should bring it back down anyways.. I hope this works if not then just email me and I'll see what I can do to help you guys. My email is ross_albright@yahoo.com.

this is the problem

Most likely it is your cat converters or your exhaust is vibrating against your heat sheld.
