4 cyl tranny in a 5.0

I have an 1989 gt con. I want to swap the auto for a manual. I have heard that the tranny out of a 4cyl will work with a new pilot bushing. I would like to no if there are anymore things i would have to change to make this swap possible. Or is it easier to us a t5 from an 5.0, can i use a proformance clutch? will it hold up to some abuse?

My car just has bold on's. headers, x-pipe, pulleys, mas air meter, throttle body, cold air intake. any advice will be greatly appraciated

I think you can use that t5 from the 4cyl. but you would have to use the clutch disk from a 4 cyl because it is a 10 spline and i believe 5.0 t5's have a 24 spline input shaft and i think the 4cyl. clutch disk is smaller i know the the shafts are differrent but the disks may be the same size which wouldnt be a problem , plus i have heard the t5's from a 4 cyl. have better ratios than its 5.0 big brother

Many will disagree with me on this.

I would not because the input shaft is too long and too narrow. The imput shaft will press into the crank and can cause the bearings to fail prematurely. Also you should have a pretty good vibration to boot.

The four banger trans is alot weaker and 1st gear will be almost useless.

So, thats why [I] would not use it.

Agree. They are weak. You will break one within a year on a stock 5.0. I didnt know about the length of the shaft though, Buddy used one in his 79. He made the pilot bushing. Worked fine, then about year later it went. This was on his STOCK 79 2bbl motor! People drag race them for the first gear. They dont get many passes on them if they are lucky. Also, they are cheap and plentiful to come by not to mention the are very weak!

To use the 4 cyl. tranny, all you need to do is change the pilot bearing as the input shaft is a smaller diameter on the end where it goes into crankshaft. First gear is a different ratio in this than the 8 cyl which is why it's popular amoung people. In my own opinion, I would spend the money and upgrade to the tremec. The 4 cyl T-5's don't last very long behind the 8's because most people who put them in do so for the different gearing and it can't handle the 8 cyl power and constant abuse we put them through. just my 2 cents though.

FYI, use the pilot bearing is for a diesel ranger.

It was (I believe) a one year option. I didn't even know about them until I started looking at this very swap for my lo-po. no-dough '83
