Noisy T5
 

I'm wondering if any of you have this problem? I have a 1994 GT with the stock T5 and shifter. I have quite a bit of gear whine in 3rd. There seems to be some level of gear noise in all gears. My old 86 GT never really had any gear noise. I'm going to change the lube since I don't think it was ever done before. Do you think this would help? The car has just over 100,000 kms. The previous owner installed and removed a hurst shifter. He said it didn't fit right, the shifter hit the console in 1st gear. Would a sloppy re-installation cause this noise problem?

I've had 3 cars with T5's and they've all been fairly noisy. Once the miles rack up they only get noisier. It's a good idea to service the trans though becuase it only costs a TINY bit of money and time compared to any other service you could do.
I've heard that aftermarket shifters transmit more noise to the cabin because there isn't the soft rubber bushing in the shifter isolating it from the trans. I wouldn't worry about it until it gets either hard to shift, grinds or REALLY whines.
Also servicing the trans will give you an idea of how the internals are because there should be pretty much no silver flakes in the fluid (a tiny amount may be normal in a never serviced car with many miles) and copper flakes would indicate blocker ring wear which wouldn't be a concern either unless your car is having shifting problems.

Well, compared to my 86 gt this one does not shift as easily. My old one could be shifted with your finger tips. This one requires more effort. I noticed blipping the throttle on downshifts helps it get into lower gears, especially 2nd. My old cars tranny felt better at 170,000 kms when I sold it than this one feels now.

I'll take a close look at the fluid that comes out in any case. I wonder if these rubber bushings were not installed when he put the original shifter back in.

I second the noise transmitting through the shifter. After I put a new transmission in my old F-150, I left the rubber floor boot loose till I was sure the new tranny would work and I thought I was driving a thrashing machine. After screwing the boot down it stopped all the extra noise coming into the cab.
FYI. . .every T-5 I've had or seen makes some noise. The Green thing really makes some noise after the rebuild and a new Pro-5.0 shifter. No boot at all on the shifter. I'mm hoping the noise is the lack of the boot and not my rebuild.

My old t-5 was low on atf fluid for a while, i think it leaked, but shortly after it started whineing bad, and worse in 3rd, eventually leaving the grocery store, it broke:( i only had 4th gr to get home on. when we took it apart the 3rd gr cluster was broke in pieces..

change the fluid, and be easy on it, mine was abused on sticky tires too, along with high mileage, but my rebuilt t-5 is slowly beggining to increase gear noise after some hard driving.
