Carter AFB Carbs

Does anyone know of a good resource for how exactly these carbs are suppose to be hooked up? I think I have the vaccum advance wrong. In the front of the carb does it go in the right or left? Does it matter? Any other advice on these carbs would be great as I have on my 82 now along with a new intake and it seems to have less power....

I have one of those too!

I have a Carter AFB on my '82 also. I have a Mallory electronic distributor so I don't have a vacuum advance module.
According to the instruction manual I have here, it says the vacuum advance goes to the port on the left(looking at carb).
I don't see what the difference is but try that one and plug the other one.
You should also have the large vacuum port in the center of the carb going to your intake.
You might also want to make sure that your vacuum advance module is actually working.

I hope this helps

It;s been a while since i've messed with my carb but there's two types of ports on those things.. I have an edelbrock but it's the same thing... infact it says carter on the side... anyway.. there's full vacuum and TIMED vacuum ... I think that's what they call it... in anycase you want the timed vacum that doesnt activate until the carb is at a certain throttle position and therefor doesnt give you the advance till you need it... cause the distibuter should have mechanical advance as welll.

Most other vacuum devices will use full manifold vacuum.... brake booster, AC/Heat Controls, etc...

Thanks for you info! I will go mess with it now and see what else I can break...

You want the left side one, it won't pull a vacuum at idle but wil once the throttle blades are open. The other one is straight manifold vacuum.
What did you have on it before? I recently got rid of my 625 Carter for a holley 650 dp, lost a mpg or two but there's no comparison performance-wise. I had no problem getting good driveability out of the carb but max performance was tough to find with the carters.

Carter

I had all the stock stuff from the 82gt. 2v motorcraft carb and intake. I have it in the left side now, just wanted to make sure.
I'm new to all this car stuff....

Thanks!

keep your old stuff

You might want to keep all the factory stuff you take off your car.
You'd be surprised how many people are looking for that stuff.

Thanks for the tip. I have most all of it except the old air cleaner assembly.
