new track times, dissapointing...

Well, i ran 3 passes, these drag radials obviously dont work!

my best 60' was 2.2. but i got home and noticed i was losing coolant, i fixed that.

Best time was 13.5 103, with the best 60' 2.2, im buying slicks asap! i ran 13.2 101 with my old stock combo! but on e.t. streets.

I know the stock fuel pump is holding me back, as well as the intake, i have 500$ to blow right now, what should i do besides the slicks? gears? my car doesnt lack any low end, im thinking a new intake, and, or some longtube headers, i want to see 106 mph traps, what do i need to do to achieve this? my heads been ported, e-cam pulls nasty on the street, i blew the tires at the track threw 1st and most of 2nd.:( almost swereved into the next lane, and hit a nova i was running.....

btw, my motor seems to be falling on its face at 5500?? is it the stock intake, or unequal header, or both? im thinking a tfs street, or edelbrock rpm, whatya think fellas? also, my rocker smay need shims, would that cause poor performance? my heads were milled .10, i didnt use shims. all in all, the car pulls like a mofo... better than it used too.

Your 60' time is killing you. My suggestion would be to focus on the suspension so you can use the power that you are making. Consider some upper/lower control arms and shocks/struts to allow the weight of the car to help plant the rear tires. A good run is decided in the first 60 feet of the track. Good luck.

Coupe50h 04-11-2003 10:27 PM

Yea, well i already have lakewood lca's, stock upper, lakewood rear shocks, stock monroe front struts, also these drag radials, are FAT, 275/50/15, i dont know if the track just wouldnt hook or what, i do know they can't touck a slick, not even close....

I still thought id see at least 105mph with all the port work done on the heads, i guess i could see that with a better intake. im not satisfied. i did get the port work free, and got the heads cheap, but it was a lot of work ya know?

fiveohpatrol 04-11-2003 10:47 PM

slicks will get you to 12.80s atleast. I would expect maybe even some 12.60's if you drive the piss outta it

04-12-2003 12:22 AM

You need gears and tires,BOTH. You need gears, suspension, tires,A Driver thats not afraid to break things, and a healthy well matched combination for your best times,I see so many people on this forum disappointed yet,one of these things are always missing.

the 3.27's just are not a drag oriented gear ratio and drag radials will never give you the traction of a slick.

looked at your combination again here, you need to get some drag struts so the front comes up and plants your tires, this will help your 60-foot's ALOT and your overall times.

Im not scurred:D i was launching at 5k on a stock motor, broke one t-5, i dont have any slicks anymore, guess i'll buy some more, also, i dont knock the 3.27's too much, they arent for the track, but i have got some good 60's with them, and stock suspension, they were great for when i was flying down the highway going to work, but i have a beater truck for that now.
thanx for the replies, so you guys think i can see a 12.80 with slicks? if so it'll be worth the work to me.

Skyman 04-12-2003 02:22 PM

Your MPH shows about exactly what I expected. Don't change your headers, its not worth the time or money. I have unequal shorties and they aren't holding my car back at all.

That stock intake definatly is hurting you though. What TB and MAF do you have? The E-303 cam in my car falls off around 5500 too. I had my best times shifting at 5500 w/ the e-cam, when I added 1.72 rockers its now 5700rpm. I'd go with the street heat intake to keep enough lowend power on your car, and its a real good price. Other than that your just going to need some slicks. You've got a 12.70 in it w/ a 1.80 60' and a new intake, which will put you at 105mph definatly.

Coupe50h 04-12-2003 03:07 PM

Thanx skyler, i forgot, your car haulz bawz with unequal headers.

I guess without retarding the cam it's gonna fall off about that rpm, i also run 1.7s, but get this.... today i put the timing back down from 15 to 14, yea not a big difference, also dropped fuel pressure to 37 and the car felt stronger around 5500+ also my distributor cap was charred:confused: i replaced that today, now the car starts up on the first bump, sky, thanx again, im ordering that intake asap, also the 190 fuel pump.
i'll keep updated, slicks+intake+fuelpump= me empty wallet, ahh how i love my car though.:o

Skyman 04-12-2003 03:47 PM

BTW. What intake did you get? Also I dont like chips, why don't you try removing it.

Have you tried a shortbelt at the track? I got almost 1mph from it.

SKyler

Coupe50h 04-12-2003 04:01 PM

sky, im still using the stock intake, a little porting on the lower.
the chip i got for free, i might remove it, yes i do have a shortbelt, i tried it with my old combo, it didnt help much.
another thing, back of my heads need plugs, i put my finger back there, and felt nothing coming out, it does have threaded inserts, also, i tried removing that chip before, it was too hard to get out, my friend installed it.
thnax.

red82gt 04-12-2003 08:12 PM

Get rid of the stock intake, you're only as strong as the weakest link for airflow. I had an offenhauser dual port intake on my car and it only ran 97.5 mph with my GT-40's. With an edelbrock RPM it went 104.7 at sea level, even with my old carter carb. With an intake you'll see well over 105. I'm hoping for 107 out of my car this year, we'll see in a couple of weeks.

Skyman 04-12-2003 09:04 PM

take off the passenger side kick panel pull down the computer and it should be right there. **** Id rather install 20 chips before I'd change heads, its not too hard :), I'm just not a big fan of chips, especially if they aren't custom...

You'll see 105+ no problemo, your cars a runner.

If the lower was not professionally ported, that is probably what is holding you back. I was going to suggest gears and my ported lower until I saw your going to a 331 later which my lower is marginal on due to the added cubes - good to only about 5,500 rpm on a 331. A Cobra would be good to 6,500 rpm on a 331. Why don't you cruise the "for sale" adds on the forums and try to find a used Cobra or Explorer intake. Get that for $150 and you might be able to do gears to. Then address that traction issue with some real slicks!

Here is a pic of my work just so you can judge how yours might have looked in comparison. Do a search on Stangnet in my user name and you'll get LOTS of references.

Coupe50h 04-13-2003 01:02 PM

cool pic tmoss, there is no way my intake is ported that much, we did do it with a hand held grinder in a machine shop, it was a mild port job, the guy that works there says you cant go much more on the stock intake, thats bs since some guys are opening them up 3 times as much as i did.
but the work was free, you can say it was done professionally, hehe bye two idiots, including me, and we been drinking beer all day lol:confused:

Thanx sky, i'll work on getting that chip out of there, my car is a runner for sure, it did so good with stock parts, i was almost afraid to modify anything, now that i have, i just need to get the combo to work together, that wont be a problem, i'll keep updated.

Ackbar00 04-13-2003 05:17 PM

Dont ditch the DR's yet. I have finally got my 275-40-17's to get a 1.80 60FT(After 4 years). Definality need a fuel pump and intake. What intake you getting? I have nothing but good things to say about the edelbrock.

Coupe50h 04-14-2003 07:49 PM

cool ackbar, i know the pump will help, after stepping into it, it definately runs out of fuel, sometime si'll here a blub blub noise after wot rides! I was going to get the tfs street cuz it's cheap, i also heard nothing but good about the edel.

Coupe50h 04-14-2003 08:04 PM

oh yea, do you have the performer rpm ackbar? yea i guess these dr's might hook as they wear, if you remember, my post, i was saying how i had a coolant leak, could have maybe affected traction, it was a bad leak, dont know how the tech guys didnt catch it.
