Help me out you mustang pros
 

alright people. this may sound like a rookie question. i have a stock 1983 convertible 5.0 glx mustang. i want to know what are the first steps i can take to increase hp. right now i have about 220. what can i do to increase hp right away without having to buy anything yet and then what mods can i do to increase hp. note, i'm a college student with limited funds. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks.:)

The first thing I would do is get a double hump crossmember and get rid of the stock single exhaust. After that there is a number of things you can do.:)

What mods do you already have? My '84 5.0 came with only 185hp stock, so I would assume you have done some work already to get where you are at. Does your car have the 2-barrel CFI? If it does there is not much free horsepower you can get other than bumping the timing up a few degrees. Changing to true dual exhaust is definitely a good first step if you haven't already otherwise the exhaust will prevent any other mods from reaching their full potential.
