Wrong dip stick, how much is too much?
 

I just got an 89 mustang and i believe the wrong dip stick is in the engine. How many quarts of oil is required to sufficiently run the engine. I might need to find a new dip stick or just set the right amount and make a mark on it. Let me know. Some have said 4 with additives and others say 5 quarts. ??? Thanks.

My '88 cant take almost 5 quarts.

You need 5 quarts

loosen both drain plugs when you change oil and filter,and it shall hold 5 quarts like it should :)

far as the dipstick,if you think it's the wrong one,after you fill it full with 5 quarts of oil,mark it on the dipstick where it shows it's full, til you can get the right dipstick

you definately need to make sure that you drain both sides of the oil pan...after you've successfully done that and replaced the oil filter....it should take 5 quarts.

5 is what Ford recommends however 5.0 Mustangs & SF did a dyno test and found that their nearly stock 5.0 made around 7 more hp with 4.5 qts than w/ 5. With 5 qts they had aeration problems with 5 qts but not with 4.5.

Oil loss??
 

How much oil does your stang lose over say two weeks or so?

Do higher compression motors, even with baffles, "push" aerated oil vapor out of breathers?

Is a certain amount of oil loss normal?

Obviously, this is based on my own experience of losing about half a quart every two-three weeks of daily driving (200+ miles a week)

My car loses about a quart every 3k. I do have some seeping going on though.

2 drain plugs in a 95 too?
 

"Both drain plugs"?? Does my '95 have two drain plugs too? I just bought the car and changed the oil the day I got it but the only drain plug I saw was in the front, middle of the oil pan...

Yes you have 2 drain plugs. On the convertable the other plug is kind of hidden by the under chassis brace that is under the oil pan. If you look closely at the bottom of the oil pan you will see another drain plug just above the under chassis brace, on the drivers side/bottom. The front plug will only drain about 3/4 quart. The reason for the front plug is because the pan is made to provide clearance for the oil pump at the front of the engine. Because of the K member the clearance is tight and does not allow for a front sump pan.

Thanks for both the info and the compliment. I was planning on taking some more pictures but we just don't seem to get much good weather here unfortunately. Eventually I'll change the pic to a better one.

As far as the oil goes...does it matter which I drain first? I did notice when I changed my oil that very little came out, but then I put oil back in. I should probably drain again and replace sense I'm sure I have way to much oil in there don't I?

Sorry, that probably sounded extremely stupid about having too much oil in the engine. My dip stick doesn't seem to show anything worth while when I check my oil level. It appears that is touches the sides all the way down so you can't tell what the REAL level is.

Just a reminder if you go ahead and put 5 quarts or 4 1/2 for that matter in and mark the dipstick with a new full line make sure that you start the car first to fill the filter or you will be a quart low next time you check it.
