She is gone, do you smoke?

I just found out that a coworker whom I have been dealing with on a weekly basis since 1993 died of a heart attack. She was @48 years old and she was not over wieght, or overly stressed out, but she did smoke a lot. (1 1/2 packs or more a day).

Now I wont preach (hell who am I to tell you what you to do). But if any of you smokers can quit, why not do it?

I quit smoking cold turkey in 1988. It wasnt easy but if I can do it you can. (Smoked my first cigarette at age 12, stopped at age 26, 1 1/2 packs a day or more)

I quit cold turkey after 9 years of smoking and the last two smoking two packs a day... haven't touched a cig in approx 5 years... It took 5 or 6 failed attempts to stop but I guess I was just ready when I quit the last time, it was so easy!

When I was 16 I started to smoke a pack a day, but I created "Cam's program to stop smoking".

1. Buy a 26 oz. bottle of Rye.
2. Buy pack of Cigarettes
3. Smoke a puff
4. Take a swig
5. repeat until bottle is empty

When the hang over is gone, notice complete adversion to cigarettes (and unfortunately Rye :( )
Although after several years, you can learn to love Rye again :)

I smoke about a pack a day.

I've never tried to quit because I enjoy it http://66.227.101.70/contrib/corky/smilies18.gif

Heh, me too. I'm 24 now and have smoked for about 6 years. I hear all day every day, "aren't you going to quite" and unfornately I'm not, I like it! I have no doubt in my mind I could quite if I wanted, I really don't smoke that much compared to most "smokers", but I like it and I just don't want to yet.

Maybe in a year or so, or whenever I get back in shape?!?!

jj_jonathon 05-04-2003 01:16 AM

ive never even smoked one...i get enough second hand to consider it one of the most disgusting things a person could do...that smell irritates the hell outta me...

I dont see how you can like putting smoke in you that does nothing but make your lungs black and lead to an early death.

That and waste so much money on cigs that could be going towards car parts instead. But whatever. Not my problem :p

I did the same thing, and now I'm 22 and still smoking. I am gonna try to quit, but not any time soon. Too much stress.

I quit two and a half years ago after smoking for 20 years.......I wish it hadn't taken me so long to quit, but now that I have I will NEVER smoke again...........not worth what it does to your body...:(

Sicy Stang 05-04-2003 01:54 PM

Its really difficult to explain to non smokers why it's so enjoyable. http://216.40.249.192/s/otn/confused/shrug03.gif

Its not like we dont know its damaging ourselves.. but just about everyone damages theirselves in one way or another. Whether it be drinking, drugs, even caffeine... I figure I could be doing worse things...

Ponygirl67 05-04-2003 03:17 PM

I used to say that too, one day something will happen that will just make you decide you want to quit........I loved smoking and there are still days when I think I would love to have just ONE drag......but I was really ready to quit, and that is where you have to be or it won't work!!!

Second hand smoke is enough for me. Whenever I hang out at pool halls and leave and get home, I have to take a shower because I can't stand how I smell, but that's convinced me not to ever do it. ~Brian

I've never smoked a cig. in my life. Glad for it too... but it's like telling Mustang or car people not to drive fast cause it's dangerious. We know we put our risk when we go to the track, or giv'er when we're on a straight-away. But who cares, it feels good. My dad's been smokin for 25 years or so and I've been trying to get him to quit but I've given up. My g/f's parents quit a few months ago, they did it both the same time cold turkey, 1 think I noticed was there was alot of tension in her house for a few weeks. :D

The sad part about being hooked on smoking is that smoking makes you feel good by taking away the terrible feeling you get from not smoking. I try and explain this to people who don't smoke, but unless it is something you've felt it is hard to relate to. I recently started taking Zyban in an effort to quit, and it is working great. It takes away the desire to smoke, which I did not think would be possible. If I wasn't so scared of dropping dead, or worse, dying an agonizing slow death like my father did, I would smoke all of the time.

Good. That should be put in place nationwide.
