what exactly does oil pressure tell me?

i was just curious becasue the 90 lx i have i have the pillar mount with water temp, oil pressure and volts. I know what the other two are, but not the oil pressure. It ranges anywhere from 38 to 80. When I first start the car it goes to about 80, then falls down a little to 60, then I drive it and it goes up some more as my rpm's go up. Then I stop and idle again and it is at 38 . What exactly is this telling me, and are do these numbers sound OK? Thanks

Thats definately plenty of oil pressue. Considering my car idles cold at 45 to 50 and is about 22 or so at idle when the oil is hot. The hotter the oil gets the lower your oil pressure will be because it becomes thinner when its hot. The heavier weight oil you run the more oil pressure your going to have. But you have plenty of pressure.

The oil pressure gauge measures your OIL pressure in the engine

High is good low is bad, zero means the motor will sieze. Anything below 15 - 20 psi hot at idle is too low. 10 psi per 1000 rpm above that is a rule too.
