Head Install

Anything i need for a head install besides the gaskets and new bolts?

Mach 1 05-07-2003 08:46 PM

no, and you can re-use your head bolts if u want

BlueMust5089 05-07-2003 08:58 PM

Damn i thought you could only torque them once

Mach 1 05-07-2003 09:05 PM

It doesnt hurt to replace them, but many people have reused them several times over with no problems, including myself. of course, this is assuming you clean them up and inspect them, and properly re-install them, and you just dont take the rusty, corroded shape they were when you pulled them out and slap them back in.

Just out of curiosity, what is the best thing to clean them with? Also, if you pull the heads off with the rockers still in place, and put the same pushrods and lifters back in the same places, do you have to take them off and re-adjust them when you put the heads back on? It may sound like a dumb question, but I would like to know. Thanks.

You can reuse them if your really despite, but your chances of blowing a head gasket increases. Head bolts are "torque-to-yeild" which means they stretch when tightened, and will ultimately weaken when reused, causing improper torque readings.

I think it's just piece of mind to spend the extra money to ensure that no problems will occur. After all new heads aren't cheap, so what's a few extra bucks for new head bolts?

A wire brush does the job real nice. If you pull the heads without removing the rocker arms, when you go to reinstall, you will have the pushrods forcing the rocker arms up, thus you wont be able to seat the head correctly and wont get a good torque reading.

Do i just torque the rockers down oir do i adjust them? If so how do i adjust? They are the Crane street/ race rr's

NotchJohnson 05-10-2003 12:51 AM

They need to be adjusted. Go reads the thread titled "help. backfiring after re-doing top end". I explained in there how to do it. - John

Not all head bolts are torque to yield. I believe factory bolts are not, but I may be mistaken. I do know that I recently purchased a set of cheapo head bolts for my T-Bird from autozone and they are torque to yield so if you bought these new check to see if you can find out from the company if they are torque to yield. If they're not, clean them with some B12 chemtool or other cleaner and a wirebrush and bolt em up. I reused the head bolts on my cougar and didn't even clean them, it ran like a bat out of hell and never had any problems with head gaskets. Main thing is to make sure that you get an accurate torque reading so if the threads look all fubar might want to get a new set.

They used torque to yield bolts in the later models ( no specific year ) and they can be re-torqued up to three times. also remember to use thread sealant on the lower bolts, as they run through a water jacket.
