I have a 1989 convertable 5 spd with pullies, shorties, x-pipe, cold air intake, 4 wheel disk, 17inch 99 cobra wheels, 373 gears, cobra clutch kenny brown double cross subframe connectors. I have about 4 thousand to spend....canadian. My question is what will i need to but motor wise to get me there? What suspension parts are needed? and is my frame strong enough to do so without bending the **** out of it. My car is has 70 000k's on it and is straight as an arrow, and i would like to keep it that way.... please help me.

The old school way is TFS TW heads, E-303 cam and an Edelbrock intake. Nowadays, AFR 165s or 185s, Custom cam and Holley Systemax 2 or TFS intake.

With that heavy azz vert your gonna need to make over 300 RWHP to get there. AFR 165s to keep good velocity along with a Cobra with a ported lower or Edelbrock RPM and a custom cam from a good cam specifier.

Just keep in mind that if your racing at a track they will require you to have a roll bar for a vert if your in the 12's.

Yup, 13.99 or quicker for convertibles.

Nitrous is a cheap alternative too!

Yeah it is. He said he wanted to run 12's though, so I just wanted to make sure he knew about needing a roll bar.. :)

ok so if i was to go with a blower, what other parts would i need to make a good complete setup? What would be a good choice for suspension? are southsides a good choice ? can i get into the 12'S on street tires? I would like to stay away from slicks if possible, due to the great amount of stress put on the frame. Please keep in mind that I would like to keep this car as streetable as possible. Thanx

roll bar i don't need no stinkin roll bar. Just kidding, I hate the look of a 5 point in a vert, But i like the shape of a styling bar. Can u get a functional styling bar? correct me if im wrong but do u need a helmet in a vert?

ultraflo 05-11-2003 12:49 AM

13.99 or quicker.... yeah, you'll need a helmet (and a rollbar/cage).

My approach: Nitrous Express single nozzle system jetted @ 150hp, an adj. fuel pressure reg. (40psi), fuel and nitrous pressure gauge(s), bottle heater (1000psi), one heat range colder plugs gapped at .035" (Autolite 24's), 93 octane pump gas, 12-14 degrees timing, an MSD window switch, and a pair of M/T ET Streets. Just my opinion... ;)

Motor wise? .... like mentioned: heads, intake, cam.

Suspension wise? .... depends entirely on the primary function of the car: if it's primarily a street car: upper/lower control arms, aftermarket K-member and A-arms, adj. coil over struts, adj. shocks, etc.
