Clutch slipping in 2nd, above 4000 rpm?
92 GT 5.0, Manual (170,000 mi) Totally stock except 2-chambers Flows...
Hey, when I get down on the car, let's say I'm taking off from a light, shift to second, running it hard and looking to shift at about 5k, then at about 4000, clutch starts slipping (going in and out of transfer of power to rear wheels). I can't see it being anything else. (There is like a 1% chance that perhaps I could be wrong but i seriously doubt it). So i figure it can only get worse. Especially with summer right around the corner. Planning on getting a new clutch which should solve the problem. I know I may be a little vague here, but doesn't this sound like a right diagnosis? New clutch will be ~$515 (parts + labor) and I'm figuring i might as well do it while I have the money.... Plus, my traction lok is dead. Only one tire gets power. Both don't. Thinking of taking care of this also. Any suggestions... advice or other tests that I can assure myself of a correct diagnosis. Thanks guys. |
I was told at one time to try this (from Mr.5.0):
Put car in 4th gear and slowly let out on the cluch. The car should stall immediatly...if not then clutch is worn out. It sounds like your clutch is shot by the sounds of it but try that test and see what happens. |
I honestly don't know much about the 5-speed tranny simply b/c I never really looked into the details. I don't understand how that little test works, but I'm willing to try it out. Thanks for the advice 82 GT

I'm not sure why either but I'm guessing that it's a good way to test the gripping force of the disk
If the disk is really worn out then I would assume that the clutch would slip and not stall right away.....even in 4th gear. That's just my guess though. I don't think it would work if you had really low gears like 4:10 or lower. |
It sounds like you are right that the clutch is fried and I agree the 4th gear thing might work. Also, if it slips in 2nd it should do it in the rest of the gears as well as you might have enough power to get a wheel to spin in second. You are surely spinning though 1st gear.

I tried the 4rth gear thing and it completely stalled out.
Like I said b4, it is only doing it in 2nd above 4000. Consequently, 2nd is the torquiest gear I got (with the stock rear end). So I'm guessing that has something to do with it. I'm gonna let a friend of mine drive it and give his opinion. |
Quote:
Multiply each of those numbers times the axle ratio and that gives you the total gear ratio for those two gears....see what I mean? 1st gear will always be the torquiest gear. I'm not trying to make an *** out of you(you know I'm not) but mathematically 2nd being the torquiest doesn't add up. It doesn't do it in 1st??? With that many miles I'm willing to bet the clutch is bad unless the last owner replaced it at some point which I'm beginning to doubt. |
Brian, of course I know you're not trying to make me look dumb or anything. You don't even have to mention that. :)
Forgive me, but when I said that 2nd was the torquiest gear, I was not even thinking about 1rst (of course you really have no way of knowing this unless I write it  :D) b/c 1rst seems to go so fast (when racing--- at least to me, someone who is relatively new to racing manual trannies). The FEW races that I've had in the car seem to only spend time in 2nd 3rd and 4rth. Moreover, I'm not even able to use 1rst to it's full potential b/c my posi (traction Lok) is out-- tire just spins. :( Anyway, I haven't felt it in 1rst yet, or any other gear. I'll find out if it really is the clutch one way or another for sure, soon. Thanks for taking the time to add your input, though. Later... |
