Widest tire on pony rim?
What's the widest tire you can put on pony rims?

You don't want to go more than 1" either way off the size of your rim. Thats a 9", no? so your widest would be a 10" tire=255mm width

I'm running 245/50 - 16s. That's the widest I'd suggest going or your really risking making the tire balloon out.

i agree, i have 245/50's any bigger and they'll balloon.

Hi,
You'd also have to consider the Quad-Shocks, since they limit clearance. You can safely go 245mm with the quads, but if you want to keep your quads and go bigger, you can flip your quads or remove them completely. If you want to keep your quads, flip them for more room. If you want to get rid of them, either deal with wheelhop or put in aftermarket rear control arms. Im currently contemplating whether I should flip my quads or not. Any tips/opnions on this idea? I have 255/50 16 BFG drags on ponies. I wouldn't go any bigger, but the fit and look nice.

Don't have pony's but was wondering what else there is to do about wheel hop, the quads are removed and am running 265's in the rear with BBK uppers and lowers and the 50/50 lakewoods. Still hoping. On street tires of course....thanks

PUT YOUR QUADS BACK ON MAN! That is why you have the wheel hop problem, doesn't matter how big yous tires are.

Before I got Cobra R's I had on my pony's 255/50/zr potensa RE-1's But they looked way to much for that 7 1/2 rim (like a nuclear mushroom) go with 245's trust me ..Trying to stick the widest tire on a late model MUSTANG is really NOT all that ..Those in the no are only going to shake there heads at you and say (He just don't no) In other words it looks like **** ..they take the quads off the back and stick meat out the back that has no reason being there (ha it looks BAD) yea in your head it does...any way don't go over board ..your stang will love you for it ..

If you put a really wide tire on your rim, you'll have to run less psi than stock to maintain a contact patch with the road. The tire does tend to mushroom out and as a result the middle wears much faster at the same psi as a narrower tire designed for the rim. I myself (with the help of 2 coworkers) managed to wrangle a 295/50R15 tire on a 15x7 Camaro RS rim because the owner insisted on having a monstrously wide tire. It bulged like crazy and rubbed around corners and bumps as well as looked crappy. Also remember there's a reason why there's quad shocks on a mustang....they didn't always have them and the rears would hop like crazy even with the stock traction bars ('82 and '83 i believe had them).
