Not so bad. I already have the complete mach 460 and the thieves didn't cut wires from radio. Engine is complete except for the air filter
Look like they just needed specific parts to upgrade a base model GT. I think parts will be easy to find. But ignition switch scare me a little. :( |
The ignition switch itself is a very easy job. Once you get the new one, you simply place the key inside the lock cylinder. There is a small button on the steering column underneath where the key sits. Press this in with some sort of small blunt object, line the tab near this button with the slot on the lock cylinder, and slide the key/lock cylinder assembly into place. Release the button and check for proper operation of the key in all positions. There are no wires to hook up - the contacts on the end of the lock cylinder touch the contacts inside the steering column and carry electrical current.
Before doing this however, if you are restoring the car to a complete state, you need to do two things. First you need to buy the upper and lower steering column shrouds. If you get them after replacing the ignition switch, you will need to pull the key and lock cylinder out and do the process over again. Second, that black ring hanging from wires in your picture clips to the steering column where the lock cylinder goes. But, from the picture, the part it clips to on the column looks like its broken. You may need to have the column repaired or replaced...not sure. Don't know what other models you can source parts from...sorry but I hope this is helpful. |
Wait a minute...just looked at the picture again. It actually looks like the entire hole where the ignition switch/lock cylinder slides into the column is busted off the column. I think a new or junkyard sterring column is in your future before you do anything mentioned in my last post.

Anything look like missing. See pics.
Except for the Air filter case and the missing strut tower brace on 98's. |
Other than the air filter and air filter housing, nothing looks out of place. The picture isn't coming up very good on this computer. I will try looking again from work tomorrow.
As far as I know, the strut tower brace was standard on the Cobra but not the GT. I don't have one on my 98 GT. If someone really did "drive it like they stole it", they might have redlined it or otherwise beat the crap out of it. I'd check all the fluid for their condition. Just something else to factor into your decision. |

I'ld never understand why people doing this. I think other grade of spring from ford is better. You're right! I think i'ld be better to check the tranny fluid before investigating for my parts. It can say a lot on this car. Finally the entire car pics |
i can tell you one thing that engines has had either a new intake or the head swap done on it the 98 gt did not have the aluminum coolant cross over on it they did not start doing that until 99 and up models also the 98 came stock with a mobilizer i believe so you will need to have the keys sync`d to the ecu for the car to start
