Hypereutectic piston durability?
Im getting a 347 installed soon, mods on it are gonna be 65mm TB, mild cam, 1.6rr's, gt40p heads (light port work done), trick flow street heat upper and lower intake and of course 3:73's. My car is a daily driver and will be raced at the track maybe a few times a year, Im also getting the NOS 5115 dry kit installed and wanna spray up to 150 a few of those times at the track probably just gonna use the 75 shot but you never know. My question is will these pistons hold up or should I stick with forged, I was goin this route cause it was in my budget and forged were like almost $1,000 more. Anyone suggestions or comments will help

dont even bother with thew hypers. Especially with a 150 shot of nitrous they will not hold up.

That depends on the maker of the pistons. Yes hypereutectics are weaker than forged, and the don't like detonation. Also, with pistons such as Keith Black, the ring gap is more critical. They recommend a bit larger gap for nitroused applications to eliminate a problem they had with blowing ring lands off. However, if set up right (make sure your engine builder knows his stuff) and if the car is properly tuned, the hypers will hold up. Just look at all of the almost stock 96+ mustangs out there running blowers and spray.
Anyway, the short answer is if you can possibly afford it, go for the forged. Hypers could work, but I know that you will have better peace of mind going forged. I wish I did. --nathan |
Well whats a decent set of forged internals out there, some brand names that wont cost me alot but are still good.

Ill let you know, I am putting a 64mm Turbo on my 93 stock shortblock. Mabey I will run a poll to how long it lives:D

I cant really wait long he wants to order the inernals very soon besides what if I go NA and no juice and just wanna beat it up a lil here and there on the street or track.

TRW Pistons...
I have flat-top TRW's and have no probs...compression is about 9.5-9.6 with TFS heads.

Scrapla,
You may think that you won't run juice or boost right now, and that's fine. That's what I thought. However, give it a couple of years, and you'll be dying to throw on the spray. I've got no complaints with my Keith Blacks. And if I had set the ring gap wider (I set it real small for good oil control and didn't think I'd ever want to spray) I would be spraying right now. If it were me doing it all over, I'd go with forged. TRW's are fine for most street/strip applications. --nathan |
Well i am running the keith black 12:1 compression pistons and i thought about running the forged, but the pistons i have are 30% silicon and since that means less wear and tear and less resistance it is better in the long run for N/A cars. I was thinking about putting a 75 shot on it when i break it in and need more speed but i would not go more than that. The pistons have been through hell and back, they had been urning coolent, my cam stopped spinning and the pisonts held up to the beating of the valves really good, so i think that you should be ok... but dont put anymore than 75 shot on and plus the pistons are lighter so it gives it a quick rpm pick up. The keith blacks are some damn good pistons!:D

I'd say run it!
Yeah,
I have forged pistons but if I was in your position, I'd run N2O in increments and see what happens. Why not? If you are thinking about replacing your pistons, just drive it 'till you NEED to replace something. I wouldn't slap a 150 shot on right away, but a 75 is worth a go... good luck... |
Thanks guys, the 150 shot was my mechanic gettin all excited after seein my NOS kit hes nuts but I really wanna stay N/A but I can also easily picture wanting a super charge more then NOS but its like I have the kit just sittin here so its like as mine as well spray and not waste it, the kit is still in the shrink wrap not even touched with a 10lb bottle
