need some help here!!
I had a high flow x-pipe installed in my 96 gt. I had this done last week, and I took it to the shop to have a ding fixed on the left front quarter panel because my wife backed into my truck. Now, the check engine light is on and the "overdrive" light flashes on and off in the instrument cluster. I also saw that the speedometer doesn't work sometimes. I left the car on for a while and now it works but the "check engine" light is on. I know I have to install the MIL eliminators to get rid of that, but My question is why did the "OD" button flash and the speedometer stop working for a short period of time? Has anyone encountered this? I need to know what to do. IS INSTALLING THE HIGH FLOW X-PIPE BAD, CAN THIS VOID MY WARRANTY?

I'm not a lawyer, but by law I think the dealership has to PROVE your mods caused the problems, but short of keeping a lawyer on retainer and money for court costs, its hard to get some dealerships to touch a modded car. It varies per dealership.... The first thing you should do is get your codes read. It sounds like you have other problems other than your exhaust sensors. |
In OBDII once a code is set it will stay untill there have been 40 warm up cycles with out the problem reaccuring or if you clear the codes manually. I suggest you disconnect your battery for about 30 min. to reset the computer. The code will then be cleared. If there is a problem the light will turn back on. I wouldn't do this untill after you install the mil eliminators otherweis you wouldn't know if they are the ones setting the code. If everything is working fine on the car then just disconnect the battery before you install the MIL eliminators and by the time you are done the computer should have cleared all the codes. Start your car up and go for a little drive and then is the MIL comes on again then you might have a problem with the VSS circuit (vehicle speed sensor) or there could be a short somewhere in your instrument cluster. Take the car to a dealership and have them check for what code is set and take it from there. I love OBDII!

As previously stated - sounds like an electrical issue.
The install of the X pipe shouldn't have have causing all the complications you described. BTW, it really does fall on the dealer to prove the part caused the malfunction. |
I went to a local mechanic and had the code checked. It was the vehicle speed sensor. I replaced it and cleared the code. Thanks guys

Wow! I guess I made a pretty good guess on that one. Maybe I should be a technician.

With your car being a 96, you probably don't even have a full warranty anyways, if it's used. I bought the warranty at the dealership when I bought the car, and it doesn't cover exhaust. So you wouldn't have an issue if that was the case anyways. If it was covered though, like everyone else said, they would have to prove the aftermarket part caused the problem.

just for the record unplugging the battery will not delete dtc trouble codes they are burnt onto a eprom and will stay until a computer ob2 scanner clears them.

not supplying power to the PCM for a certain amount of time would clear the ROM. The manufacturer reccomended way is with an OBDII scanner. The reason why they recomend doing it that way is because you won't clear all the customers preset radio stations and etc. I have cleared codes by unplugging the battery several times on OBDII cars including my '02 GT.

maybe on 99 and up they will but not the 96-98 models i have tried this before getting a obd 2 scanner and it never worked the codes were always there when i supplied power aging to the pcm

I had a hard time clearing a catalyst effiecency code the other day. After I left the battery unhooked for about 12 hours the codes cleared. If your radio presets don't erase then the capacitor in the computer is still holding power.
