OK, track #'s- time to evaluate!

i finally went to track this year in my new to me 90 stang. here are some times i rean. i ran a total of 9 times!!! POOR CAR!
Anyways, I got progressively better with 1/4 mile times as well as launches and mph. here a re a few from worst to best.

each take off i spun a little in first and second. more so in first. I shifted quickly from 1 through third and power shifted into 4th each time. the first slow times, i did not bring the rpm's up at all, and spun like crazy. i played with it a little and found that i could bring the rpm's up to about 2 grand and drop the clutch. those were my quickest 60' times. these are on regular street tires with less pressure in them. Now my question is! HOW CAN I GET CONSISTENTLY 13.4 TIMES AND A BEST OF 13.2?? THIS IS WHAT THE CAR HAS DONE BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. ANY THOUGHT ON LAUNCHING TECHNIQUES AND SHIFTING, AND MYTIMES? THANKS!

drag radials...

how low did you go with the pressure? most street tires will cup in the middle if you go to low.. less tread on the ground..

Coupe50h 06-21-2003 06:57 AM

man, buy an 8.5 slick, and drop the clutch about 5k, your problems will be over, and you will be in the 12's.:p
unless you would rather play around on radials and end up buying expensive control arms that dont even help much?

imo dr's arent worth a dang, all mine did was not hook, break my wallet, and went bald extremely quick.

A set of 26x8.5 m/t's were better investment than dr's.
just make sure your t-5 is in decent shape. i can run a 13.4 on big fat dr's, but whats the point when i can go 13.0 on a little slick?
ok i'll shut up....

1jimmy__d 06-21-2003 09:49 AM

tire pressure was at 26 psi. the guy before me ran those times on these street tires. thats why im wondering what i can do to get better times. i started to figure it out towards the end, but i didnt want to keep ragging on her. i plan to buy drag radials my next set of tires in the rear. i dont want slicks cause then i will have to change them all the time and i dont drag too much at the track, just there to have fun and get as low as possible, AND beat my friends 98 z28;)

Coupe50h 06-21-2003 10:27 AM

The previous owner could have had better track conditions when he ran that.
Yea swapping tires is a pain, luckily i can just drive straight to the track on slicks:D (4-5 mi. trip)
you will have to play with timing too, my car runs great advanced to 16, some like 14*, if you can, get the track guys to pour down some vht traction compound, i cut a 1.9 60' on 225 radials, one, and only one time..... heh.
a 1.9 for you would mean real low 13

Tuning, tweaking, and PRACTICE will get you your 13.2's, IMO it's there already, you just have to squeeze it out!

lx mike 06-21-2003 07:33 PM

could be a few things. was he using same tires thats on car now?? same weather conditions?? what was you shifting at??
With the mods you have mph should be 104-107 range. did you let car cool of any after you made a run?? air the fronts up to 35-40 psi for less rolloing resistance. what was your 1/8 mile times and mph?? might take you a lil time to see what will work with the car. your in the 13.5's so your close!

1jimmy__d 06-22-2003 08:38 AM

he used the same tires that are on the car now. my 1/8 mile time and mph for the 13.5's were 8.8 at 82 and 8.7 at 81. i was shifting from first to 2nd right before red line. the rest i believe i was just past the yellow range. i emailed the previous owner and asked him when he shifted. he told me right after he redlined! maybe i should try that, but i thought i could get VALVE FLOAT? or something. good idea?

Coupe50h 06-22-2003 08:52 AM

I can tell ya all about valve float, if your going to the redline dont worry about that. your 1/8th mph is good, i gone 8.3 1/8th @ 82 mph with slicks, im touching 12's with granny gears in the rear.

where are you located ?? might help to know the weather conditions. your mph isn't showing alot of hp. even with bad traction you should still make decent mph.

1jimmy__d 06-22-2003 04:35 PM

im in ny and it was about 65 degrees out. he lives in new jersey. the car did not sit at all in between the runs i made. i kept the temp no higher than 190 during the wait between runs as well. do you think if i let it cool down in between it will makea difference. the best he has run is a 13.2 at 105- he is very adimant about that as well. he ran 13.4 consistently:(

red82gt 06-22-2003 05:10 PM

Keep going higher with the shift point. The valvesprings on the holley heads should be able to handle 6200rpms at least but watch out for the 6250 stock rev limiter. I've got a best of 13.32@105.1 and I needed to go to 6200 rpms to get that MPH (then again, my car is carbureted so my powerband is likely higher). If I drop my shift point to 6000 rpm, my mph drops to less than 103 and at 5800 I get about 102mph.

1jimmy__d 06-22-2003 09:11 PM

what happens if i hit the rev limiter? so, maybe i wasnt bringing it up high enough rpm wise. what exactly is short shifting, and do you think it will help me with my times? thanks for all replies. so far i am going to put more pressure in my front tires, keep my rears at 26 psi, and bring rpms up to a little over 6. any other thoughts? how about rpms when taking off. thanks

red82gt 06-23-2003 02:08 PM

The rev limiter cuts off fuel momentarily at that rpm making the car fall on its face, ususally blowng your run. Short shifting is when you shift too early, it usually will blow your run too..
Shift it at 6000 and see what happens.

Dark_5.0 06-23-2003 03:30 PM

Your trap speed isnt too great for your mods especially considering you are on street tires.

Throw on some slicks launch at 5000 rpms shift at a hair over 6000 and I bet you will run 12.90's @104mph.

1jimmy__d 06-24-2003 04:26 PM

ill try it again on street tires. he is very adiment about running 13.2 at 105 best time and 13.4 consistently! maybe i will need to cool down between runs!

1jimmy__d 07-17-2003 10:14 AM

with nitrous now!

OK, I have nitrous installed now and went to the track last night again! Talk to me about how I can get tot he 12's. I am surprised at the times I pulled off with the nitrous! not much better as you will see. I sprayed most of the time after second gear, some towards the end of second gear. Brought the rpms up to 2 grand and dropped the clutch, power shifted 3rd to 4th each time. I ran street tires again with regular pressure in them. didnt know if there was an air pump close by. Didnt let the car cool down until after the 4th run or so. Here are my times;
** TEMP, 67, humidity, close to 100**

60' 2.2
1/8 8.9 85mph
1/4 13.4 111 mph

60' 2.1
1/8 8.9 86 mph
1/4 13.3 112 mph

60' 2.1
1/8 8.8 85 mph
1/4 13.3 112

60' 2.1
1/8 8.7 86 mph
1/4 13.2 112 mph

RT .721
60' 2.09
1/8 8.8 85 mph
1/4 13.3 110 mph

OK, I know Dr's would help a lot, but I thought I would be able to hit high very low 13's, high 12's on street tires. Any suggestions??? Thanks

Jim

Dark_5.0 07-17-2003 10:31 AM

Here is a suggestion. Quit spinning your money away and buy some damn slicks:rolleyes:

Nitrous and street tires equals stang into guard rail I have seen it many times. A new vette smacked the rail 2 weeks ago.

Your trap speed on the juice is good for a 12 flat. So quit racing on street tires and get some slicks then go bust off a 12 flat.

After you get some slicks and launch at 5000 rpms and hit the spray off the line you will be thinking why in the hell was I even messing around with the street tires.

VeNuM 07-17-2003 03:16 PM

Your 60 foot times are KILLING your ET's. GET SLICKS! ~Brian

1jimmy__d 07-17-2003 04:40 PM

could i use the nitrous with DR's off the line? how much would DR's help? i still thought i would be able to get 12's on street tires:mad: i am going to buy Dr's next, what do you think i will run with DR's?
