88GT (stock motor) dont wanna hit 5th in 1/4(what gears do I get)

You can read my sig and tell that my car is damn slow. I am tired of racing hondas just to get a win. I still have the speed density computer so my motor is still stock.

I have no idea what gear ratio my car has right now I am hoping that it has 2.73's.
I heard that 5th gear is really just overdrive and ideally you dont want to hit 5th in the 1/4

I cross the 1/4 mile line @4000 rpm's in 3rd
gear if I shift @ 5200 rpm's.

I like my car but its time for some speed.

The tag on the inside of my door is scratched up but it looks like the axel code is M. I was thinking that I need 4.10's correct me if I am wrong (Thanks in advance) http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

I travel at least 40 miles a day to and from work, and sometimes travel a few hundred miles on the weekends. I'm on somewhat of a budget, but I couldn't stand my 3.08's so I went with the 3.73's. If traveling isn't a problem for you and you just want speed in the 1/4, I'd say go with some 4.10's.

damn man, that is hard for me to believe. (not saying your lying or anything)
is this an auto or a stick?
if an auto, i say 4.10 w/o question. (personaly opinion)
and i would consider them for a stick as well.
if not, 3.73,,,, no less.
crossing in third???? @ only 4000???
that still baffles me.
maybe try shifting a 5000 and see if it helps your times. if not, than mess around with it at different points and see how it works.
that is also the first time ive heard anyone call a 306 a stock motor. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

I would try a new TB..Then as DR said if traveling isnt a problem I would definatly go with 4.10 gears..The get a new racing crank pulley..

WAIT A MINUTE!!!
get rid of that 160* thermostat!!! i bet that is slowing you down man. i learned the same thing when i had one. they just dont let the engine get warm enough to run properly.
if you got it with them damn hypertech chips, then get rid of them both!!!
at least teh thermostat. 180 is plenty cool.
if you have heating issues with a 180 than you have heating issues elsewhere.

First get rid of that 160 thermostat and put a 180 in. then get a set of 3.73's, i see you already have the drag radials and a good clutch so you should be ok and pick up quite a bit now. GOOD LUCK!

4.10's are perfect. They take me threw the traps in 4th at around 5500. The other advantage is that the thing jumps off the line like a jack rabbit. Get the 4.10's, they are way worth it.

Get the 4:10s. I drive mine everywhere, it's my only street car. Gas isn't that bad and fifth gear keeps them quiet.

Dark_5.0 06-15-2001 12:41 PM

Thanks for the quick replies guys the 160* stat is gonna be taken out and 4.10's are in the near future.

Guess your right 306 isnt stock http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif
