Loud clicking in 2nd gear (1994 Cobra)?

Hello,

There is a loud clicking in my 1994 Indy Pace Car Edition Cobra... It only occurs in 2nd gear and is not seem related to speed/rpms/gas pedal pressure.

Also, it only occurs when fully engaged. No one I have talked to seems to know exactly what it is. The previous owner said it was a spring on top of the transmission that needs to be reattached (but requires the tranny to be dropped to access it).

Does the spring issue make sense? If not, is there anything else it could be? Outside of the pretty loud clicking, there aren't any noticable issues with the shifting.

Any ideas?
