stock 5-star pony wheels/black??

I have a black '90GT with the 5-star wheels that came on 5.0s in '91-'93. My car is lowered about an inch or maybe a little more with Eibach specific rate springs. I had the wheels polished years ago but the shine is fading quite a bit now. Even when they were freshly polished they really don't match the chrome plastic caps that go over the lugnuts, being that the wheels are not chrome. I was thinking about getting them powder coated black. What do you guys think it will look like? Anyone seen some on a black stang? Better yet, anyone have a picture they could post?? I'm debating on getting new wheels all together, but I can get a deal on powder coating through a friend.

If your car is red, white, or black, I think it would look sweet. And the white car would be kind of iffy.

I've seen a black notchback w/black ponies, it looks bad as *****! DO IT! A soon as I get a new Stang (black( I'm definitely getting the wheels painted black.

WOW!! Those do look sweet TMASTER! I like how you left the outer ring silver. Is the outer ring polished or is that just bare aluminum after the silver coating is taken off of the stock wheel? Just so I can get an idea...how much do you charge to do something like that? And what about the caps? Does someone make them in black or do you just have to paint some stock ones? Thanks for your opinions guys...I'm leaning towards doing it. Anyone have any other pictures of '87-'93 Mustangs with black 5-star ponies? Ummm...like maybe a black GT? LOL.

takes about 5 hours for each wheel. Bare alum lips, then cleat coated over the whole wheel, painted centercaps. ;) ;) its a time consuming beotch.

TMASTER- Yeah, that does sound like some serious, time consuming work. Do you do stuff like that for a living? Is this something you've done more than once? If so, how much do you charge for it? Just trying to figure out if it's worth it or not. I wonder if the paint would start chipping when prying off those center caps...because depending on where you get them from...they can be a real tight fit. I guess if I got the entire wheel powder coated black though...I could just leave the center caps off. Hmmm.... Decisions...decisions.

the wheel will not look as good without the silver lip. Ive had these wheels on my car for about 3 months, and there holding up fine. Those are my first set to do like that ;)

Did you strip the original paint off before coating them? They look powder-coated, but not sure. The do look awesome!!! For those of us wanting to copy them, hope you won't mind passin on a "how-to"!!

So if you don't mind me asking...but could you give me some more details on what all you had to do with stripping the aluminum down to the bare for the ring? My ponies are already stripped of the factory clear coat and are polished. But they are fading bad. What kind of paint did you use? How many coats of paint? How many coats of clear coat? Have you had to take your center caps off since? And did the paint hold up and not crack, flake or anything? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks TMASTER.

you have pm in a few

jrgoffin 08-01-2003 10:14 PM

TMaster,

If you wouldn't mind passing some more details on, I'd love to hear from you as well.

I talked to a local coating shop that has done some powder-coating for me in the past - they gave me a price of about $60 for each wheel. Not too bad, but the center caps have me stumped - yours look great!! Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe
