A COUPLE ???'S
FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IS THE HIGHEST LIFT CAM I CAN RUN WITH TFS HEADS AND THE STOCK PISTONS? SECOND, WOULD IT BE A BAD IDEA TO SWITCH TO A SOLID HYDRO CAM INSTEAD OF A ROLLER? WHAT WOULD IT DO? CAN I EVEN DO IT? HOW COME MOST OF THE GEAR DRIVES SAY NOT TO HAVE ROLLER LIFTERS? ABOUT HOW MUCH TO GET THE PISTONS FLYCUT? AND LASTLY, WHO MAKES A WINDAGE TRAE FOR 302?????? AND WHERE CAN I GET IT AND HOW MUCH? THANKS FOR YOU TIME AND FOR HELPING A ROOKIE OUT.

I can't tell you what size cam will fit, you'll have to check the room for yourself. As for a solid lifter cam, yes you can convert a 5.0 to a solid lifter cam but you would be losing a lot of bottom end torque. Roller lifters allow for extremely fast ramp speeds which will open the valves a lot faster for a given lift and duration. This means you get better cylinder filling at a lower lift and you keep most of the top end power. This is an over simplification but, you can write a book on the differences. Solid lifters give you one advantage over hydraulic lifters. . .RPM! Solids allow you to run higher rpm's because the length of the lift (thus valve lift) remains constant since there is no pumping up of the lifter that might cause ugly things to happen in your engine. You get more power but usually at a much higher RPM than a roller.
It's kinda like this, Roller cams are the best thing since round wheels (my opinion) You can build power all over the rpm range without suffering the ill effects you get with solids or plain hyd. cams. |
Every where seems to say you can run a .512" lift with the TFS heads, but that all depends on duration and rocker ratio. The only true way is to check clearances. As for solid cams, why? A hydraulic roller lifter in a 5.0 can make plenty of power, some guys run in the 12's with the stock cam, supercharged even more. Gear drives emit vibrations throughout the valvetrain, and I'm guessing it might put strain on the roller set-up, also the roller cammed engines have knock sensors and the gear drive would probably set them off and the CPU will retard your timing, not a good thing if you want to make power. Flycutting pistons costs around $150 at my local shop. A windage tray can cost from $110- $160 maybe more. Call Summit racing. If your considering these parts, get the windage tray, stick with a hydraulic cam, and forget the gear drive and spend that $250 elsewhere.
