Tach with shift light ?

Hi,

I have a 2001 GT. Looking at buying a nice, good quality tach with shift light(5'' ones I guess). This will be use for helping me at the track with my shift points(hate hitting the limiter) just set the light at the RPM I want and shift when it lights up.

anyways, got a couple of questions.

1- What brand do you recommend? price ? WEBSITES to see it ?

2- Where to mount it ? maybe left side of the dash close to the window. People that mount it in the middle say its in the way.

3- How easy is it to install ? do it yourself kinda mod?

4- How do you install it ?

Any other opinions are appreciated.

Thanks.

I got this one from summit. I think I paid $109 for it a few months back. I dont know where to mount it or how to install it on a new stang. It was fairly easy on my 90gt, I mounted it on the dash to the right of the guage cluster, ran the wires through the speaker cover on the left, and hooked them up. One to the power, one to a fuse that is activated with the lights, one to ground, and one to my MSD box. Again, I wouldnt know how to hook it up on yours whereas the ignition system is different.

you know you can get just the shift light. Thats what I'm going to do, my mustang already has a tach, so why buy another one?

The reason to buy an aftermarket tach is they have a larger face and are easier to read, and if you mount them in the right place you don't have to look down away from the road to watch your revs. For drag racing it might not be as important but when I am attacking the twisties at the limit I can't afford to look down at the tach in a corner.
The only tach mounting kit I have seen for newer stangs is made by Paul's High Performance, but it mounts it on the dash to the right of the steering wheel, which you mentioned might block your vision a bit. http://www.paulshp.com/paulshp.htm
As for what kind to get, I light AutoMeter or Ford Racing tachs.
You also need a tach adapter to put one in a 99+ Mustang. You can get one at Dallas Mustang for around $50.
