professional help please! I'm stuck.
I'm running a 351W with stock 5.0 heads, some kind of cam, GT40 lower, cobra upper, 80mm maf, 70mm tb, 30lb injectors, 190lph pump, 1 5/8 equal length hedmans, h-pipe, dynomax race bullets, & 4" tips. I'm not sure if it's a roller block or not. My best time was 14.665 @ 95.9mph. I think that's frickin slow. timing is @ 14, i still have the stock computer. What should I do. I'm thinking of going with 24 pounders instead of 30s. Should I get a chip? Will that make my computer work properly with my mods even though it's a 5.0 computer & not a 5.8, or maybe with the chip I don't have to change the injectors. I think the injectors are too big, I'm running rich so any advice would be greatly appreciated.I'm still running 2.73s, & stock T5.

Stock 5.0L heads are your first mistake. That has to be the single most restrictive component in your setup right now. You should check out some World or AFR heads depending on your budget.
The 2.73 gears should be swapped for 3.55 or 3.73 for sure. You're going to have to find out exactly which camshaft you have. That will effect everything else you do with the engine. Which injectors are the MAF sensor calibrated for? That could also be a problem, plus you'll have to get a new one if you decide to change injectors. If you're running ANY aftermarket injectors you should also have an adjustable pressure regulator with gauge installed. Most people running 24 pounders start out with the fuel pressure at around 35psi with vacuum detatched. With your 30's, I can only guess what you should be at but considering you have a 351 it should probably be right around 32-35psi. 30's do seem like a lot to me, too. If you have a chip I'd highly suggest ditching it for now and maybe permanently unless it's custom burned for your application. Do things one step at a time and you'll figure it out. Running rich as you are is probably really hurting you the most, though. ------------------ Capri306, Moderator, The Mustang Works Online 1979 Mercury Capri, 5.0L -- C4 -- 2.73 1987 Mustang LX Notch |
Ya, those stock heads are bad on a 302, and HORRIBLE on a 351. I'll agre with Capri306 in that you need to find out what camshaft you have. The 30lb. inj. will be fine once you get some real heads, right now you are probably rich. You'll want to look into a new transmission as well, cause you'll rip the stocker apart in short order.

Your heads are a major problem. Your TB is too big for the heads, too. Get yourself some TFS TW heads and that baby will come alive. 3.55 gears should be fine.
The 30# injectors should only be affecting your idle and emissions. I wouldn't worry about them too much for right now. But with those heads, 24#ers are probably too much. I have 24#ers but have my fuel pressure at 47 to make them like 26.3#ers. The computer doesn't care what size your engine is.
