glad i din't start my 'new' motor....oil pump!!!!!!!
stopped by 'checker auto' and picked up a high volume oil pump.... got my motor together,,, tried to prime the pump,,, no oil,,,, pulled the pan, oil pump rod is 1/2" too short,, how the hell did that happen????
checked the pump depth at the store, same as stock, but the driver obviously needs to be a bit longer than stock... so if I would of put the motor in (without priming the pump) I would be sitting here with a ******N blown motor,,, thanx to checker (previously known as 10,000) auto parts... so now i get to play the *ss hole!!! thx to the guys who helped on the other topic... I owe ya one.... ------------------ Black,84 GT,ground effects, shorty headers, 'open' dual exh.,302 HO(no pollution control crap),T5,89 ported heads, edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 2122 cam,600 Holley, high volume oil pump... 4:10's on their way!!!! |
ps, the pump rod was part of the kit....

yeah, that sux. when i did mine it was the exact opposite. ended up with about a 1/4 inch too much! had to hacksaw it off the distributor to get the hex drive to fit in properly and the distributor to sit flush. i read about it in a 5.0 performance tech manual and every place i called thought i was crazy.
that was the ticket though. nothing else worked. Unless your bearing clearances have been open up for that Hi-Volume oil pump I would get a stock replacement. I speak from experience, I had tight clearances and put in the hi-volume pump I had way to much pressure over 80psi at cruise with 5w30, I would bury the Autometer Mechanical gauge on start up 100psi! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif. I also had gasket leaking problem because it would fill the valve cover with oil whch also caused vacuum and breathing issues. SO when my motr was apart this winter for some changes I went back to a Stock volume Melling pump, man what a difference I still hae great pressure but now it is 70psi on cold start up and I have 58-60 while cruising at operating temp, that hi volume pump is also hell on the distributor and it sheared 3 teeth off my distributor gear which only had 20K miles on it. Going back to the stock pump is also good for 10-15hp across the rpm band so I am told, if you don't need the HV pump, the stock one is just fine, run a good chrome-moly Drive shaft.
