Reach under the dash to the back of the headlight switch. There is a button back there to push. When you push it you can pull the headlight knob and shaft out of the socket. Then removing the rest is easy, if I remeber correctly.

Ford shop manual

I have to drag out my Ford shop manual and read the directions each time I want to remove a headlight switch or an ignition switch. Actually, I use mine quite bit a for stuff like that. I recommend spending the $35+ for one.

Took me a while to also find the button to push on my 68. Feel behind the dash on the headlight switch. It's a very small white plastic button on the right-hand side of the switch. You'll have to feel all over it to find it. It's a tight fit, but you have to depress this button and hold it in while pulling the knob straight out. It may take the flat side of a screwdriver to push the button, and it might require a hefty jerk to remove the knob, which is mounted on a shaft about 3 inches long. Once the knob is out, you will see a cross pattern inside the bezel. Use a large screw driver to turn the bezel counterclockwise. Removal of the bezel will release the switch housing from the dash. Then, you can unplug the switch from the wiring harness. The hardest part for me was finding the stupid little button.

A new switch is a good reference of where the button is.

Jerk the begeezusus out of the rod to remove.

Not sure if you ever got the headlight switch out or not, but I stumbled across a picture on the Internet showing exactly where the button is and remembered your posting. I've attached it. Hopefully, it'll help.
