Power Steering or Wood Chiper?
 

I know this is the wrong forum but I browse here and there are alot og knowledgable<sp?> people here. My wifes 2000 mustang has a problem :mad: The power steering has a loud whine to it which I assume is to age (87,000). When te steering wheel it turned it makes a louder whine but it also can make a *chunk* noise which also affects the drag on the motor (rpms drop and raise a bit) almost the same affect of throwing branchs in a chipper... anyway I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow. I'm not sure how much can be done for it. Can it be drained flushed? and refilled easily?? Or is it similiar to brake lines in which I would have to bleed it? Any advice would be great.. I have a feeling we'll be getting a new pump but anything that you all know of that I can do before that would be great. Thanks

i found some syn. power steering fluid and that quieted the whine alot. i took a turkey baster and sucked out the fluid from the unit and refilled it.

Sounds like you might have some air stuck in there, possibly from a leak.

Make sure there's enough fluid and jack the front end up. With the engine running turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock, maintaining the proper fluid level. Hopefully that will knock out any bubbles.

Take off the low-pressure hose (the one that come off as a clamp with a screwdriver).
TRY (as inevidably you'll miss) and aim into a bucket. Once "mostly" drained, cap off the housing fitting. Add new fluid, while the hose is still draining into the bucket. Rotate motor (dont start it, but just crank key for short strokes), as this will pump new fluid thru the rack.
Now attach the hose.
Fill the reservoir.
Start the engine, and turn wheel lock-to-lock a few times to remove bubbles.
Top off reservoir again.
