Thinking of a 460 swap, need some advice

Been away for a bit and the car is sitting empty in the garage. No engine or trans. The paint is next. I have been looking for some big block donors around town. I was thinking of getting a LTD or Lincoln for the 460/C-6 to plant in the pony. I want to go carb with a mild street set-up, maybe edelbrock heads intake and cam. Just wondering if any of you guys or gals have any experience with this swap, and what things I haven't thought of.
Thanks for the help
It's good to be back:) :)

oil pan for fox body
460 headers
water pump for serpantine
pick-up for fuel tank (carb)

Was it an eight cylinder car before? If not then a bigger rear end, (8.8 or 9 inch), front springs, and brakes to start, then a different drive shaft, motor mounts, shifter, hood may not fit anymore, possibly the brake booster, (although the 86 & up boosters I think will fit, I just went to a manual setup). Thats just a start, I'm sure you will get lots of replies of thing I have forgotten about. Is it worth it? To a point it is, you can't beat the torque of a big block, but it can be a lot of work.

What about a stroked 351 instead of a 460?

460!!!!!

The car is a 5.0L, it had a mild 306 w/ EFI. I have been thinking of stepping up to more cubic inches. I have a 351W (block & crank), but after doing the numbers I think I can get more power for a lot less money out of a 460. I was thinking mild 460 very steetable would out torque a stroked 351 and cost considerably less.
Thanks for the help

Go to http://www.mmjax.com and go to the message boards and ask for Tony G. He has one thats almost in the 8s. Hes the owner of HP Automotive and get you all the parts you need at a good price. Give him a shout and tell him Bill sent you. As a side note ask him what color the car is

Sounds like it will be a beast! Only downfall is trying to make it fit I.E the brake booster wont work and many other things.

The brake booster will work you just cant run the TALL valve covers. But an aftermarket stock type aluminum cover will still allow you to run roller tip rockers..

Im doing the swap as we speak as well. I pretty much got all the swap stuff from hooker. The oil pan out of the newer trucks should work. Im hoping that i can try fitting the motor in there soon i just need to find a tranny first.

Not worth it!

This is a pic of 429 in a 1989 notchback. Car has never run without overheating yet. A problem I've talked to others about, people think it's because the intake sits so much higher than the radiator causing air to settle there. So we've had to swap in a 2" drop k-member. The car already had vents cut through the nose and bumber an aluminum radiator and electric fans. You can hardly put spark plug wires on and it requires a hole to be cut through your trans tunnel if you want to get to the starter bolts, that's with a c6 not sure how bad it would be with a c4. Also headers are a treat because the steering shaft runs throught the middle of them so I would get a flaming river shaft to help out a little. Just go with a stroker and save the hassle.

I think you could spend less on a 5.0 and make it just as fast, if not faster than that heavy old 460.
And no modifying to make it fit.

rwhite65 10-28-2003 04:36 PM

not sure I agree on spending less on the 5.0 and make it faster. Probably total project would be less money...due to custom headers and things like that, but I think the 460 would be more durable.

Just depends on what u r looking for, the "oh wow" of a big block wedged in there, or the stealth of a highly modified 5.0.

Im just not a fan of stuffing 5 pounds of **** into a one pound bag
you gotta have room to work on it sometimes.
Its not fun to have to pull an engine to change spark plugs.
Had to do it on a 69 mach 1 with a 428cj.

rwhite65 10-28-2003 06:28 PM

if i had to pull the engine to change wires...then I would not do it either....but if you could get it to work....even if it were a tight fit....I think it would be unique.

Thanks for all the opinions. I have been down the 5.0 road and spent some money, when I was in high school me and my brother always swapped out for big blocks with low budget set-ups and would skunk all the guys with small blocks. Just wanted some opinion to see if it might work for the mustang. Anyway I found a donor for a 351W and if it works out maybe she'll be mine. It will probable be an easier swap. I'll just spray the crap out of it....hehehe

Thanks again

Coupe Devil 10-28-2003 11:43 PM

Cool you found a donar but if that falls through I still vote big block...

Just look at it this way.. Would your wife want a big block ( big bore short stroke.. make TORQUE ) or a meesly high windin over to fast small block????
