01 Trans am vs 01 cobra

It never fails everytime I drive my Cobra to work I catch a race on the way home. I was at a red light side by side with a 01 TA it was black with nice chrome rims and loud exhaust.

I really wasnt interested in racing till I heard him touch his throttle and sustain a long rev. We took off from the light normally and then as if we were thinking the same thing we both punched it at the same time. we were both going about 15-20mph in first gear when we hit it. My car squealed the tires a little bit and then hooked he immediately fell back about 2 cars due to wheel spin. Then I hit 2nd and fish tailed a little and he started to reel me in. I rode out 2nd and hit 3rd he pulled up dead even with me and missed a gear and fell back again then he found the gear and pulled past me.:o

The guy couldnt drive and still beat me. I gotta get the LX complete soon.

damn that got to hurt. that is bad, is it a stock cobra??

Dave_mustang_50 10-23-2003 06:43 PM

Sounds like he was pulling hard. I rode in my buddies 02 ram air and it didnt feel that strong- to pull a cobra like that I mean. Do you know if it was an ls1 or lt1?

sedanman 10-23-2003 08:23 PM

damn, it sounds like you meet a modded LS1 car! You need to get the LX on the road soon and get some revenge!

Jaegermeister2k 10-23-2003 11:11 PM

01?I don't see how it could be an lt1 unless he swapped it in.Anyway.Yeah i meat a modded ls1 once, and i gotta tell you it was not pretty :D Even if they were both stock i would've put my money on the trans am.The ls1 has been known to make more hp then claimed, and it already makes around 20tq more.Thing with ls1's is,they respond to mods like a bodybuilder to steroids.A simple heads/cam swap get's them over 400rwhp.

Dark_5.0 10-24-2003 04:04 PM

To clarify this guy was nowhere near stock. Probably a mid 12 second car. He might have even been spraying I dont know.

My car beats LS1's all the time but this guy handed me my @ss.

I didnt like it at all. I am sure he will eventually get to race my LX and he still might beat me his car was fast.

Dave_mustang_50 10-24-2003 06:13 PM

oops, I guess I missed the year of the TA , My buddie showed me an article in a Pontiac mag that had the heads intake and cam swap and it dyno`ed like 425. Are you supercharging the LX?

Dark_5.0 10-25-2003 10:54 AM

No but with 4.30 gears slicks and a race weight of 2750 it should be quick. At least I hope it will be:D

Skyman 10-25-2003 03:46 PM

Who cares if you loose, sounds like a fun race, and thats the point.

Yep, I totally agree...... and thanks Dark_5.0 for still posting even if you lost in the end. Good race anyway.

Sounds like a good recipe to me. ;)

As far as modded LS1's go, yeah, they can be really strong runners. Alot of guys that I race with (they are part of the local F-Body Association) have solid H/C/I combos on their LS1's and put down some insane HP/TQ numbers. 1/4 mile mph's are in the 114-118 range. :o

Nice numbers outta your 331 eric! 114mph is sweet. Whatd you do to gain those extra 6 mph, I htink your first run w/ it was 108 or so wasnt it?

Thanks, Sky. I ran a few 110's last year, and to be honest, I wasn't happy with how my combo was performing. I had a GT-40 intake, Steeda # 19 cam, 65mm TB and 9.2:1 compression. The car would really lose power as soon as it saw 5000. It was really that bad. I figured that the 115 LSA of the cam, coupled with a 65mm TB and GT-40 were choking the car up top. So...I swapped in a 75mm Accufab TB, TF Track Heat intake, Anderson N-41 cam and had the heads milled to yield 10:1 compression.

Now, it's a whole new car. It pulls like crazy up top and still has plenty of low-end from the stroker. I was shifting the car at 6000 on the stock tach - so there is probably a little more in it. And, I'd like to get my AutoLogic chip re-burned and go 115 mph N/A for next year. All in all, I'm happy how it's turned out.

Sounds a bit like my dilemma Dark5.0 I have a buddy with a 99 Transam I think Ws6? He is pretty much stock excpet exhaust. I want to race him but he says no chance cause 01 cobra's run 14's and his runs 13.4's. He said he would smoke me. I told him for christams I am putting in 4.10's, pullies, bushings and braces, CAI, FR500 exhaust and he says that I wll just break into the 13's like maybe a 13.9. Oh well his loss.

Dark_5.0 10-28-2003 02:11 PM

Hmmmm...I hit a 13 @4000+ ft. My car is just as fast stock as most stock LS1's.

@sea level I think I could hit a 13.4 or 5

I beat them more than I lose. I just happened to run across one with way more ponies than I had.

I have me smoking at least 40 LS1's on tape at the track. I also got a good amount of footage of me getting smoked by modded LS1's.

Your average LS1 only runs 14.1-14.3 here. The 99-01 cobra is everybit as fast as an LS1 with a little attention paid to the suspension;)

Skyman 10-28-2003 02:12 PM

All about having a gooood driver :)

GodStang 10-28-2003 02:22 PM

We both drove the same car on the same nite and we were like maybe .05secs apart. So are times are close.

Shaun Barcelow 10-28-2003 03:35 PM

I thought most LS1's were closer to 13.8 or 13.9 stock. My LT1 runs 14.2 to 14.4 stock.

Nice setup, Dark. It sure would be nice to be under 3,000 lbs. At 2,750 with 4.30's, you outta fly!

Dark 5.0 was referring to the LS1's at his local track which is around 4000 ft. above sea-level, making ETs look a little slower than most of us are used to seeing at near sea-level tracks.

Even stock, LS1's can lay down some nice numbers. 13.80-13.90's aren't really an issue for most with a good driver.

Yup. I missed that little detail. I'm at around 500 feet, I think. That makes a big difference. When my Bird was new, I took it out west (Colorado, Arizona, Utah). Big difference running at altitude. It took a lot of road to hit 130 in the Moab desert. I've hit 149 in Michigan. (Of course, I have way too many responsibilities to drive that fast anymore. Gotta make it home to the wife and little one every night.)
