Cleaning intake?

I'm new here and should have asked this with my brake pad question, sorry.I just bought a '92 Mustang GT and after doing some routine things, plugs, wires, cap and rotor,i noticed at the air intake it says do not clean. The butterfly valve is very dirty .Are you supposed to leave it like this or is there a special way to clean it?I get the feeling that spraying intake cleaner in there is a no-no.

You need to remove it from the car (Intake Upper) spraying intake cleaner in it I got alot out of mine. It is not to hard
