Gears? will they help?

I just been procrastinating on getting 373's, i feel that i do pretty good with the 27's, also i love the cruising rpm ect... but i cant get but low 1.8 60 ft's with them, and of course i need some harder low 1.7 60' launches to keep the upperhand on these f-bod's:)

what do you guys think? you think the 400$ is worth the gains i will see with the gears? if i see any at all?
I've heard of people slowing down going from 3.55 to 4.10 ect, so im kind of sceptical, because i could take that money, and get a nos kit, or a nice fiberglass cowl, guys help me decide, because im to worried the ride to work everyday might be to harsh with the new gear.....

Thanx for any opinions or persuasion
:p

Definitely. Though you're starting to get a pretty decent listing of modifications, the combination is still pretty torque limited. The only way past not have the engine torque is to develop mechanical advantage. Rear gearing is one way to improve that mechanical advantage. 3.27's are no way near enough gear for your combination. I'd recommend 4.10's at a minimum and even 4.30's if you're not a 100 mile-a-day commuter. I loved the 4.30's with my EFI combination on the street. The acceleration is fantastic and 5th gear actually becomes useable around town without bucking like a bronco. The money would be well spent IMHO.

Jeff you have brought up a good point, the car bucks around shaking back and fourth because of the cam and of course me trying to cruise in 5th at low speeds, id get the 4.10's, but im afraid of going to 5th gear in the 1/4, and i dont want a taller slick......your advice is much appreciated, my car goes in friday.

I love my 3:73's there great for a dail driver car that goes to the track on occasion but then again Im drivnig the highway everyday so 4:10s are outta the question for me also Im installing a 347 soon with almost identical bolt ons to what you listed, Hows that 190 intank pump I can decide on what would be good Im thinking just going with the 255 or maybe a 190 and a inline, what are your thoughts?

Coupe50h 11-23-2003 02:53 PM

The 190 is great, it was fairly cheap holley brand, of course it's all walbro pretty much, i'll have the 100 dry shot on after the gears when the budget allows, and Im tottally confident it will support more than enough fuel for even a 150 shot if i decided to break my axels :o
The 255 isnt much more expensive though, if your just going to run a 347 all motor, the 190 would be sufficient, even with a small shot of spray, just my opinion though.

I almost ordered the dry kit first, but i figured it will be much fun to spray off the line with the gears in, im hoping for some low 1.6 60's on the spray.

Yea I have the NOS dry system for a 100hp shot but thats not goin to be a daily thing I hope cause I never used N20 and I hear its very addictive but my plans are just to put in the bottle that one or 2 times a year I goto the track for test and tune no bracket racing or anything, thanks.

Coupe50h 11-23-2003 05:13 PM

oh i hear it's addicting too, but i go to the track almost twice a week, but i wont spray everytime, just depends on who im lined up with..... no bracket racing though for me:)

You won't even come close to needing 5th with that combination. With 4.10's and those 26x8.5 slicks, you won't hit the rev limiter until well over 116mph and around 112 with 4.30's. I ran 4.30's with my EFI combination well past 114mph before I switched over to the AOD. Don't be afraid of gearing up...better too much gear than too little.

how you figure? there is guys going down the track with 4.10's and 26 inch tires going through the traps in 4th gear at 6k rpm?
yea thats not too bad, but im afraid my car just dont make much power after 5800 rpm or so, i think 373 is the gear to use with a daily driver/weekend warrior.......anyhow, thanx jeff, you been helpful:) I know what your saying about "gearing up" but i think the 373 will put me in low 1.7 60's where i want to be.

For me with a 26.1" tire, 3.73s, in 4th gear through the traps = 5500 rpms @ 114 mph.

I put 3.73's on my basically stock 88 LX and went from running 14.7 quarter on 2.73's to
running 13.7 quarter on 3.73's
Gears are a great cheap mod its like instant power when you hit the gas.

Why dont you go with the happy medium, and try out the 3.90's from Richmond Gears?
