396?

Hey guys, I was wanting some opinions on a 396 build I am thinking of starting. The company sells the crank for around $400 and it is a 3.85" stroke. They recommend using stock 351W rods and 302 pistons. This would be a fairly cheap build compared to one of the 396 kits that I have seen. I plan on using victor jr. heads, .600" solid roller cam, super victor intake, and a 750 double pumper. I am debating on this build or just building a high compression 351 using about .150 dome pistons and the same parts as listed above. The motor will be run with nitrous (150-200 shot) using a C-4 and 4.10 gears. I know it is recommended to use a steel crank and better rods, but that is out of my budget. I would appreciate your opinions. thanks

Go the 393/396, it will of course make more power/torque. I'd buy the Scat cast steel crank, Eagle I beams, and a nice set of 302 pistons. Mainly since you are planning on spraying 150+ to it. This will easily hold 700hp, and you can have some peace of mine. We have the same motor in a few cars locally, and they all run good, with no problems on nitrous. They run high 6's on motor, and one has been 6.30's on 200 shot.

Good luck, Greg(XSR)

Thanks for the advice. That was the rought I was leaning towards, but I wanted to see if anyone else was running a combination similar to it. I was mainly concerned about whether of not the 302 pistons would actually work. thanks again.
