Speed density conversion

My car is a 92 lx.
Front Suspention- Motorsports springs 1 coil cut out. Lakewood drag struts

Rear Suspention- Southside Machine rear lower arms. Motorsports upper arms. Lakewood Drag shocks. Southside rear drag springs.

Rear End- 3.55 Gears. Alburn posi-traction.
31 spline axles.

2 1/2" Flowmaster exhaust. 1 5/8" Motorsports headers.

GT 40 Upper and lower intake manifolds
GT 40 heads. crane roller rockers
X- Cam, underdrive pulleys, Speed density comp., 110 g.p.h Fuel pump.

For some reason it is speed density. I know converting to mass air would be a smart move.
What is the most cost effective way to do this. With my combo what kind of results would i see.

I am wondering why the hell your car is speed density!

I'm not sure why it is speed density. I dont know what the guy who had it before me was thinking. Any thoughts as to why someone would remove MAF and put in speed density?

This is very odd. Does the car run like complete sh!t? I'm pretty sure the speed density computers were designed to run specifically on the stock cam specs. You don't see a mass-air sensor anywhere along the intake tract?

that thing must run really ruff with an X cam, unless the guy that had it before you knew what he was doing and really knew how to tune that thing!! but still that is wild!

mustangLX92 06-28-2001 12:41 PM

I see no signs of speed density on the intake duct. I bought it from a pretty good mechanic. It runs really good.

He told me it was an x cam. I dont know if that is true. this worries me because I have to get my emisions done soon.

any opinions from the questions in my first post?

QUIN 06-28-2001 12:53 PM

im not saying you dont,,, but do you even know how to tell the difference from speed density and mass air?
as for your question, most cost effective way to do it is piece by piece, computer, meter, wiring harness,,,,
as for performance gains,,, possibly none.

I see your shwartz is as big as mine, now lets see how well you handle it!

This is a shot in the dark, but is there a custom chip plugged into the computer anywhere?

mustangLX92 06-28-2001 12:56 PM

I'm pretty sure its speed density. but just to be 100% how can I tell the difference?

89 Cobra LX 06-28-2001 01:02 PM

Mass-air cars have a mass-air sensor in the intake duct. Look at the black plastic tubing that runs from the intake/throttle-body to the air filter box. Is the black tube one continuous tube or is there a circular sensor sandwiched between two pieces of black tube? If it's one continuous tube, you have speed density.

If you have an aftermarket cold air intake kit, the tubing may be chrome...........

mustangLX92 06-28-2001 01:07 PM

I have an after market cold air intake. It is one continuous piece. I definatly have speed density.

Well, I'm stumped (not terribly big news). I've never heard of speed-density computer running with a cam different than stock (heads for that matter as well).

Here's my take...... the computer is somehow tweaked to work with your combo. I would guess it is either by chip or possibly by a different computer. There's no way this car could be running well with the x-cam and stock speed-density fuel and spark curves.

Congratulations, you have a fairly unique set-up. An oddity with Mustangs in this day and age. Usually if one guy's running a certain combo there is at least 20 others running the same thing.

Good luck.

I want to know for sure what cam I have. I guess there no easy way to tell.

The car runs a hair lean, but she will scream!
