OK, whats the trick involved?

I'm replacing the harmonic balencer on my 93, trying to get it running again, and I have a rather stupid question.
I have all the hardware to get the balencer off,and back on, but I cant seem to get the main balencer bolt off. I just keep rotating the engine. What is the best way to lock the engine/keep it from turning over while I take the bolt off? Should I just hose it with penetrant and keep trying?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks
J

impact gun or a big stong arm with socket on the bolt wedged on the ground disconect the coil wire and blip the started to break the bolt free.

Thanks, I'll try that (counting I can get her to turn over, shes been sitting for about 1 1/2 years. I know the batts dead, god knows what else has gone wrong)

Just thought of this,
so whats the trick to re-torque the bolt once the new balencer is on?
thanks again

You could try putting the car in gear and setting the E brake.

I slipped a small wrench through a space in the balancer and rested it against the timing cover, turned the balancer until it wedged, and put a 3ft. pipe on the ratchet. I pulled on the ratchet imitating an impact wrench. Loosening and tightening,it worked for me.

This is how I did it.

Andy - just noticed you run NMRA in Illinois - must know Steve Moberly (Streetfly). I bought some NMRA factory stock GT40P heads from him a couple months ago.

I broke mine loose with the engine out of the car. I used about a 2 ft long racthet and hit it with a big rubber hammer 5 or 6 times and it broke it loose. I tightened it the same way.

Yeah, I know Steve real well. I bought a short block from him a few years ago. In fact I still use the same block, crank, and rods that were in it.

Steve had some P heads for sale, huh? I wonder where he got those. I know he bought Robin Lawrences 2001 Stocker motor and parted it out, but that had the regular GT40's. Those would have been the heads to get! :D

Steve and his wife seemed like real nice people. These are GT40P heads that I think were used by Troy Carter? Think that's the name - ran em in factory stock at joliet. Yeah, Robin Lawrence's head would have been nice too, but I don't know if he would have made me the same deal. I bought the P heads, NMRA prepped MAC shorties for the Ps and 1.6 Scorpions as a package deal.
