leaking tranny fluid

After a new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, new pilot & throwout bearings, clutch cable, firewall adjuster, quadrant, and tri-ax shifter, my stang is leaking tranny fluid. Looks like it leaks from the point where the driveshaft connects to the tranny. It then drips down on the center of my x-pipe, making for a smoky mess. And that damn synthetic ATF is expensive! Is this a common problem? How do I repair? Any special tools required? Hope its easy..........thanks in advance

Sounds like its time for a tailshaft seal. Haynes manual says you can CAREFULY pry it out with a flat screwdriver, but a seal puller would be best, then you just need to drive the new one in straight. It seems to be a common thing if you pull the drive shaft, Now after doing my clutch I had the same problem. Hope this helps.

It's fairly common for the tailshaft seal to go bad especially if you have it sitting for awhile and the seal dries up. If it's older, they tend to start coming apart as well from absorbing fluid.

I have the same problem on my car, but never have been able to get it to quit. I think some of the teeth back there may be worn or the seat for the seal is not flush, since we have changed the seal twice and it still leaks. I have just gotten used to it now and quit running the expensive tranny fluid:D .

can this leak be caused by changing my EXTREMELY old tranny fluid with new Redline synthetic?

Possibly. If it is like engine oil, sometimes switching to a synthetic will cause a leak to show. The older, thicker fluid may not have been able to get through wherever the leak is now at. However, synthetics will get through and your leaks might show up.
