Dumb 351w/t5 ?

Project evolution, I was planning to build a drag car then I went with a friend to a Porsche club day at a local road course and now I'm thinking about high speed corners.

Whats it gonna take to run a T5 with a 351W, is it just change the flywheel to get the right balance? Bell housing bolts right up? Any thing else I'm not thinking of?

351 is out of an '83 Bronco w/C6 if it matters.

TIA
Brian

For all the trouble it would be to put in that 351, You could do a budget build up on your 302 and be faster.

Explorer heads and intake and some long tube headers.

Yep,

stang_racer20 01-14-2004 10:08 PM

if your bronco had a C6, then its a 351M u have right. I dont think the Modifieds have the same bellhousing pattern as the 302/351W's do, but maybe i'm wrong. even if they do bolt up the 351M is not a good racing motor and parts are rather expensive for them. $.02

Get rid of the 351M and find a good 351w........the hell with a 302
Once you run a 351 mustang, you will NEVER want to go back to a 5.0 again!!

I know all you 5.0 guys are probably going to be typing feverishly in response to my last comment...but oh well:D

They made small bellhouseing C6's, so I could still be a 351W.

But for road racing a 302 provides better weight distrabution.

The car currently has a 4 cyl so building a 302 is out, I already have the 351 and it is a Windsor. As for the weight difference alum heads and dumping all the engine control wiring (going carb'd) gets you close to the stock front end weight. A K member with modified suspension geometry will also help the weight distribution, I'm also planing to move the engine back about 1/2"-3/4".

So it will bolt up?

I bet I could give you all the 302 you could handle and then some.;)

I'm not much into bench racing and I don't mean any disrespect when I say this but........judging from your signature below, I wouldn't be too much afraid of your 302.
I'm not saying your car isn't fast because I'm sure it is.
Unless you're juiced or blown I wouldn't shy away;)

Whew!!!!........when I got notification that you responded to my last post I thought "Here we go now with the flame wars over who's car is faster"

Before people start thinking that I meant that a 351 beats a 302 everytime, I would like to rephrase what I meant.

With what the average person can afford to spend on an engine rebuild, I think they would be more satisified if they spent the money to convert to a 351 and build a mild 351 rather than build a wild 302......especially if it's a non-EFI car.
When I say "mild", I mean decent heads(not necessarily after-market) and at least 9:1 compression.
I hope that clears it up a little better.

Dark_5.0, in all honesty, your car would run circles around mine right now because I have tons of torque and horsepower and absolutly NO modifications to my suspension regarding traction. It's like trying to race on a skating rink right now..:D
My traction relies upon my 245/60/14 rear tires.
I may as well have two of those donut spare tires back there!!

Dark_5.0 01-15-2004 07:16 PM

I honestly cant even say how fast my car is. Wont be able to say till Feb. 23rd when the track opens up.

My next engine will be a 351W. I will use the same heads and get them ported with a trick flow R intake manifold.

It never ends.

Theres just some places a Mustang should not go. Like 3' of mud & water, 1000 acres of sand and out side the garage in MI in January.

The world continues past where the pavement ends.:D

I did you exact swap in an 86 Capri and now I have a 93 GT w/a 5.8W.
Don't worry about the wieght difference, it's insignificant. Not worth the $ aluminum heads will set you back. Don't move the engine back either, I've never done that but it sounds like a real B***H.

It will bolt to a T5, no problem, don't use your 4 banger tranny.
Get a T5, and an 8.8 rear, your 4 cyl 7.5 rear wont last.

This is a great swap and it's alot of fun but be prepared for the extras, you need a 5.0 front springs, cooling and if you have a pre 86 4 banger, bigger spindles really help.

If you have the 351 already, don't bother with a 5.0.

Ieatcamaros 01-17-2004 05:38 PM

If I am not mistaken, I believe the 83 windsor has the same balance as the 302 (50oz). If not, then you will need a 28oz balance 157tooth flywheel. The late model 302 is also 157tooth. You can use a 302 starter. All this will bolt up to your 351w and you can use the t5. And don't be scared of it. IMO, the t5 deserves more credit than it gets. They are weak, but they can take some massive abuse. All you have to do to figure out what balance it has is look at the balancer(if you are sure it is the original one or a stock replacement). Go to the parts store and look at a 302 balancer, if it is the same as yours on the 351, you can use a 302 flywheel.

flyin 5.8 01-18-2004 05:31 AM

So i'm looking for a 28oz/157 tooth flywheel, OK.

Any advice on a clutch/pressure plate? Mostly street driven and some road racing.

Ieatcamaros 01-18-2004 09:34 PM

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I love mine. I got the ford motorsport HD clutch set. The only difference between this and the king cobra is the pressure plate. It requires less pedal effort than the HD. The HD is not as hard as some people put it. But it does take a good leg to operate.
