Will Rebuild solve my problems?
I have an 88 with the original motor in it. I want to mildly build the motor but i feel that the bottom end needs to be redone first. I have bad low oil pressure and the motor burns a little oil too. Will getting that summit rebuild that uses the speedpro pistons(know the one i'm talking about?) fix these problems and give me a strong enough bottom end to get say 350hp at the flywheel? Also at what hp and tq would you suggest going from hyper pistons to forged pistons? Or do I already need forged pistons? thanks for the info, i am kind of lost right now.

You already have forged pistons,
I dont know about the summit rebuild kit but a stock bottom end in good condition can easily handle 350 flywheel HP. But to get that much HP it wont be a mild build-up. I think thats about how much flywheel HP I have. If you are going to rebuild and plan on staying all motor. I suggest some 10 to 1 forged pistons. |
I'm not familiar with that kit. But I think if you're staying normally aspirated a good set of hypereutectic pistons are just fine. They're lighter than forged pistons, and they run tighter piston to cylinder wall clearances for better ring seal. If you plan on spraying some nitrous oxide or adding a blower, then definitely get a good set of forged pistons. They're much more forgiving to detonation.
Yes the pistons you have in your stock 88 are forged, unfortunately your cylinder walls, rings, and bearings are worn out (hense the low oil pressure and oil burning). Only a rebuild will cure that, regardless of the piston type. |
yes a rebuild will solve the low oil pressure . i would recomened going forged but your spending your own money and i would recommened a good cam and timming chain when you do the rebuild. also some 347 kits arent that much more expensive than a total rebuild .
