Camaro LS1 vs. 4.6
Ok, not trying to start an arguement, trying to end one. I already know the answer in my own mind and would just like to get some confirmation from ya'll.
In STOCK form, which is faster, 0-60/quarter/top speed- an LS1 Camaro or 4.6 Cobra (pre-2003). I say the Camaro because I know of camaros in the 12s STOCK, and read that ya'll run mid 14s to high 13s. So, I am in NO WAY dissing mustangs, I like them, and they're good cars, but in stock form, is a Camaro faster? Thanks guys. |
LS1, hands down. Not much of an arguement to make.
|
The 0-60 times arent all that diffrent between the two. An 01 Cobra in the hands of an experienced driver can be a 13.0 car. Now this is Magazine racing, but some of the magzines got faster 0-60 times out of the Cobra.
How about that Mach 1! :D |
I had an 01' cobra and I beat alot of LS1's but with drivers being equal the LS1 should win.
Ford got it right with the mach 1. Solid axle and 3.55's from the factory. |
I had no problem with Ls1s in my 01 Cobra, really depends on the driver.I ran 13.08 in my girlfriends 2002 SS, and ran 13.12 in my cobra. The IRS is a pain to launch, but reaction time and driver error is the main difference between the two.(both cars were stock)
|
In totaly stock form with the same driver in the same conditions they are about even but the camaro ss has the edge. Both cars are similiar weight and similar HP ( within a few percent) Now a GT has no chance without Mods. The IRS in the Cobra gives away alittle in the launch so there may be a slight advantage to the camaro. The 2003 Camaro, now there is a real machine! At least on the drawing board it was!
P.S. I have killed a few Z- Beasts - With the Top Down! |
I agree with what most people here have said: They are SO close that it really comes down to the driver. A professional test driver would post slightly better times in the SS Camaro than the Cobra Mustang, but let's face it, we aren't all professional test drivers (even tho some of us think we are :) ). That's my 2c ;)

but we all agree a 99 or 2k cobra will lose to and fbody. . . and it won't really be all that close, right? i was unaware of the 2k1+ changes
|
'99 and '01 are the same. '99s had a recall because they weren't making the advertised 320hp, but after the fix they are the same as '01.

Throw a solid axle in the cobra with some decent gears and it is fair game. Also the 98-00 LS1's are slower than the 00+ cause they dont have the LS6 intake. |

I have raced 6 98-01 f-bodys ranging from the z28 to a ws6 and I have only lost to 2 of them and one was because I screwed up on the line and spun real bad to run a 14.1 to his whopping 13.9 and other well I ran a 13.8 to his 13.7 but me r/t was .675 to his .527 now im not saying that they run good stock at my track I have NEVER see one stock run faster then a 13.7 and in my little GT I run 13.5s on stock tires and before the nx kit now my car is not stock but hey I have to make up for a lot displacment:D dont get me wrong I have a lot of respect for those cars(but not most of the owners I have met) with very little the run great numbers no on some good tires and gears I have seen them run mid to high 12s |
